The Tyrol region (written: Tirol in German) in Austria, whose capital is the city of Innsbruck, is located in the heart of the Alps in western Austria. It is one of the most popular ski destinations in the entire world during the winter and undisputed ruler of Austria's ski map, while in summer it is extremely popular and offers numerous attractions for travelers. It spans an area of 12,648 sq km and has a population of 675,000 residents. It is the third largest state in Austria and is mostly mountainous and forested. Only 13 percent of its land is inhabited and about 20 percent is designated as a nature reserve. The region features wonderful landscapes of massive mountain peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and picturesque towns.
In summer, it is a very popular tourist area, where ski lifts transport tourists and sports and recreation enthusiasts to the towering mountain peaks, where crisp mountain air, wonderful hiking trails, awe-inspiring viewpoints, and countless activities and adventures for children and youth await visitors. In summer, ski slopes are transformed into amusement parks, adventure trails, and charming playgrounds that provide stimulating activities for children on one hand, while enabling hikes through stunning scenery between viewpoints that are each more impressive than the last.
The region borders Germany to the north (Bavaria), Italy to the south (South Tyrol), and Switzerland to the west, therefore combining smoothly with trips to these countries as well as to the adjacent Salzburg and Carinthia regions. The Tyrol region is divided into 36 holiday regions, each with several towns and villages, and each with its own uniqueness and charm.

The attractions here are categorized by region rather than by themes of interest (animals, museums, etc.). I focused on the central attractions in the tourist areas of the region that are most appealing for family summer vacations. For skiers and winter sports enthusiasts, priorities are entirely different. Usually, each area is named after the largest city or town within it, around which several towns and villages are situated.
In each area, I added accommodation recommendations that can serve as a base for star trips to the specified attractions.

For traveling families, it is preferable to stay in one of the charming villages around Innsbruck rather than in the city itself, where lodging is more expensive and less spacious.

Kufstein Region - Kufstein Ferienland
The major advantage of the Kufstein region is its central location, allowing excursions to the Tyrol region (the Kufstein area is located in its north), the neighboring Salzburg region, and southern Bavaria—so staying here lets you "catch three birds with one stone." This area has one central town, Kufstein, and eight villages.
The city of Kufstein itself is a lovely, pleasant town with a lively center, an impressive fortress, and a wide river (the Inn River). It is situated 500 meters above sea level with 15,000 residents and is known as the "Pearl of Tyrol."
Kufstein has an old town where the most visited street is Römerhofgasse. This street is essentially a narrow, winding pedestrian lane adorned with wall murals and abundant with souvenir shops, cafes, and small restaurants. It is nice to rent bicycles in the town center and ride along the safe bike paths on the long river promenade. In the town center, there is also a pleasant mini-golf course.

Main Attractions in the Town of Kufstein:
Kufstein Fortress (Festung Kufstein)
This is a heavily fortified medieval castle considered the most famous tourist site in town. The large and impressive fortress was built on a cliff towering over the town center.
The castle originally belonged to the Bishop of Regensburg (the first written record dates back to 1205). Later, he co-owned it with the Duke of Bavaria, and starting from 1313 the Dukes of Bavaria became the sole owners. In 1415, Duke Ludwig "the Bearded" added fortifications to the fortress, and in 1504 Maximilian I besieged and conquered it. He ordered it rebuilt and expanded to the fortress walls. In the 17th century, the fortress was enlarged further. In the 18th century, it was conquered again by the Bavarians. It returned to Austrian ownership starting in 1818. Since 1924, the fortress has been owned by the Municipality of Kufstein, which turned it into the number one attraction in town. The fortress has two towers you can climb: the Citizens' Tower and the Emperor's Tower. Guided tours are conducted through its interior rooms, towers, and underground passages. In the outer courtyards, you can walk around independently. The easiest and most convenient way to reach the fortress is via the funicular. You can also take it back down to the main street, but it is certainly recommended to walk down while touring the courtyards and fortifications. The towers offer a magnificent view of the city, the river, and the surrounding towns. On the ground floor is a heritage museum, along with various displays of weapons, numerous items from the Austrian Empire, archaeological finds, and works of art. The "Heroes' Organ" located in the Citizens' Tower is considered the largest free-standing organ in the world (not built into the structure). It has 4,307 pipes. Every day at noon it is played, and the melody resonates far and wide. In the evening, the fortress is illuminated and visible from afar across the city—a very impressive sight. Entrance fee applies. Riedel Glas Wine Glass Factory
A fascinating self-guided tour of the factory where you can observe up close all the stages of wine glass production, including glassblowing, and witness the dedicated craftsmanship each glass receives. On the way to the production hall, you will pass an interactive multimedia exhibition named Sinnfonie, entirely dedicated to the senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
The factory's founder, Claus Riedel, was the first fifty years ago to design wine glasses tailored to the variety of wine, recognizing the glass shape's impact on its taste and texture. The tour naturally concludes at the factory outlet store, which sells not only wine glasses of various types and sizes, but also many other glassware items.

Boat Cruise on the Inn River - Innschiffahrt Kufstein
A river cruise on the vessel "St. Nikolaus" starting in central Kufstein and sailing to Niederndorf. The boat stops at three neighboring towns along the way. The cruise offers an impressive new perspective on the city and the fortress dominating its skyline. The round-trip journey takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, operating twice a day.
You can bring bicycles on board, sail to the nearby village of Kiefersfelden or the next one, Ebbs, and cycle back.

Attractions in Villages Near Kufstein:
In Ebbs, a peaceful village near Kufstein, there are two attractions for animal lovers:
"Fohlenhof" Stud Farm
The world breeding center for Haflinger horses, home to between 100 and 150 horses, including world and European champions from the last ten years. These horses are renowned for their gentle temperament, quality, and impressive performance. The farm features two indoor riding arenas, an arena for dressage, as well as obstacle, jumping, and carriage/sleigh courses. Additionally, the farm has large green grazing pastures. You can watch the horses training both in the indoor arenas and outdoors, and visit the museum of carriages and sleighs, some of which are over a century old, all preserved in excellent usable condition. You can join horse riding or carriage driving lessons, for both beginners and advanced riders. Private or group riding and jumping lessons are available. For children aged 3-8, special 15-minute pony rides are offered. Riding lessons require booking at least 24 hours in advance. Lessons do not take place on Mondays.
In July and August, impressive horse parades are held daily at 20:00. Various events take place throughout the year, including competitions, exhibitions, and shows. This is also a suitable destination in inclement weather since most attractions are covered.

Ebbs Rare Animals Zoo (Raritätenzoo Ebbs)
A private zoo spanning 20,000 sq m with 500 animals from 90 different species, most of which roam freely throughout the grounds in conditions simulating their natural habitat as closely as possible. Among the animals are several kangaroo species, monkeys, raccoons, wolves, various rare birds, giant tortoises, and more, many of which are endangered species. The zoo also has a children's petting farm with 170 animals including pigs, chickens, goats, and rabbits, all living in complete harmony, eating and drinking from the same troughs. Visitors are welcome to feed and pet them. The zoo offers wonderful views of the nearby Kaiser mountains.

Ebbs also features a leisure center named: Hallo Du leisure centre, containing an ice skating rink, pools and slides, saunas, bowling, and additional sports facilities. The center has a nice restaurant. It is open daily from 09:00 to 20:00 from early May until early September.
Ebbs is also considered the most bicycle-friendly destination in Tyrol.

Open-Air Museum
Halfway between Kufstein and Innsbruck (about a half-hour drive from either city), in the Tyrolean lakes area near the village of Kramsach, right by Tyrol's main autobahn A12, lies the most successful open-air museum in Tyrol:
Museum of Tyrolean Farmsteads (Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe)
Featuring about 40 authentic old Tyrolean buildings, mainly farmhouses and workshops such as a carpentry shop, blacksmith, flour mill, etc., gathered from various regions of Tyrol and traditionally furnished, showcasing life in the distant past of the region. Various farm animals roam between the houses. Activities are held on-site (especially during holidays and weekends), such as bread and cake baking, colorful candle making, and varied handicrafts, alongside numerous festivals.

Kitzbühel Alps Region (Kitzbüheler Alpen)
A region combining four different tourism areas in eastern Tyrol, encompassing 19 towns and villages. The area is known colloquially as the "Kitzalps" and attracts many tourists throughout the year. Its proximity to the Salzburg region and the wealth of family attractions it offers make it an ideal base for star tours.
The largest and most famous towns in the area are Kitzbühel and St. Johann in Tirol, both charming, prestigious ski resort towns that provide plenty of sightseeing and leisure opportunities for the entire family in summer as well. Kitzbühel is the more famous of the two, boasting an elegant, well-tended historic center with pedestrianized zones filled with colorful houses, cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and luxury hotels, all adorned with fountains and flowers.
The town also features vibrant nightlife including discotheques, bars, and even a casino.
The famed peaks that draw throngs of skiers in the winter turn into magnificent outdoor destinations during summer, offering endless hiking and biking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, peak restaurants with expansive terraces, and delightful amusement facilities for children.
In the area, one can also visit silver and copper mines established in the 16th century that contributed greatly to the local economy, though tours are not particularly appealing for children.
Kitzbüheler Horn Peak
A cone-shaped peak towering to a height of 2,000 meters, crowned with a television antenna visible from afar. It is the highest peak in the Kitzbühel Alps. You can ascend via the two-stage Hornbahn cable car departing from the town of Kitzbühel or drive up a winding panoramic toll road called Panoramastrasse. The road begins about 2 km north of Kitzbühel and runs for 7.5 km, with a maximum gradient of 18%. At the toll station at the entrance to the road, you can receive a CD with information about the surroundings. The road is open from late May to late October (exact dates change annually depending on weather and snow levels). The mountain also features several other cable cars of varying types and sizes.
At the summit is an alpine garden named Alpenblumengarten covering 20 dunams, with an impressive variety of alpine flowers peaking in bloom during the summer months. Nearby is a restaurant called Alpenhaus featuring a terrace with panoramic views. Address: Hahnenkammstraße 1a, A-6370 Kitzbühel.
Cable Car Museum (Bergbahn Museum)
A museum detailing the 100-year history of cable car construction in the Kitzbühel Alps, from early days to modern contemporary ski tourism. The museum features an enjoyable ski simulator. Opened in 1993 in honor of 100 years of skiing in Kitzbühel, guided tours through the rooms are led by retired cable car operators. The museum is located in the Hahnenkamm upper cable car station on an adjacent peak of the Kitzbüheler Horn at an altitude of 1,700 meters, offering beautiful views of the mountains and valley. Ascent by cable car requires a fee; entrance to the museum is free. Address: Bergstation Hahnenkammbahn, A-6370 Kitzbühel.
Triassic Park
Opened in 2008, this attraction has since been a favorite for dinosaur enthusiasts. The geological park is located on the Steinplatte plateau at an altitude of 1,600 meters, home to Europe's only coral reef. Access to the park is via the Bergbahnen Steinplatte cable car.
The park contains a research station and museum teaching fascinating facts about the geology of the area from 200-250 million years ago. The museum features life-size dinosaur models, fossil displays, a 3D movie, and interactive exhibits where kids can try out scientific activities. Nearby is a swimming beach on a lake, considered the highest bathing beach in the world. It includes a water playground for kids and a sandy area with digging tools for fossil hunting. A 4 km hiking trail with surprises and riddles departs from the park, with a telescope station overlooking the surroundings. The path is well-paved and stroller-friendly. The hike takes about two hours. Entrance to the park is included in the cable car ticket. Address: Alpegg 10, 6384 Waidring.
Alpine Slide in St. Johann in Tirol (Sommerrodeln)
The site features two parallel toboggan runs, each 1,000 meters long. The ascent is via a two-seater chairlift.
Rides require a fee, with discounts for children aged 6-15. Tickets are available for single rides or three rides.
You can descend back down by chairlift. The site includes a typical Tyrolean cafe-restaurant.

Another way to descend the mountain is by tandem paraglider.
Aurach Wildlife Park (Wildpark Aurach)
A spacious park, the largest of its kind in Tyrol, home to 200 animals featuring typical alpine wildlife—mainly deer and various wild goats, but also wildcats, donkeys, diverse birds—as well as exotic animals from completely different climate regions like llamas, kangaroos, emus, yaks, and several monkey species. Most animals roam freely without fences or enclosures.
Every day at 14:30 you can watch the animals being fed (except in September and October).
The park has a pleasant restaurant with a large terrace overlooking the surrounding mountain landscape.

St. Johann Pool Complex - Panorama Badewelt
The site features indoor and outdoor areas with massive pools, massage jets, water slides, children's pools, a kids' play area with a zip-line, and sports facilities including ping-pong tables, beach volleyball, badminton, soccer, and a giant chessboard. In addition, there are quality spa facilities with a sauna and massage rooms.
Separate admission applies for the indoor and outdoor sections, priced according to length of stay. Discounted admission to outdoor pools is offered after 17:00. Child discounts available. Address: Pass-Thurn-Strasse 3, A-6380 St. Johann in Tirol.
Adventure Trail "Timoks Alm" (Alle fiebern mit Timoks Alm)
Join Timok on his journey to find medicine for his sick grandfather. This is a delightful, modern adventure trail passing through ten different stations starting from the grandfather's mountain hut, featuring a trap, an underground tunnel, a telescope, water cannons, a rope maze, and more surprises. Along the way, you will find clues to help solve the final riddle. The trail is reached by riding to the mid-station of the Bergbahnen Fieberbrunn cable car from Fieberbrunn, located about 10 km southeast of St. Johann in Tirol on Road 164. The trail walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is intended for children aged 7 and older.

KaiserBad Water Park
A large complex of indoor and outdoor swimming pools featuring water activities, spa facilities, and sports grounds. There are four slides, the best being the 91-meter "Black Hole," as well as a current canal, water cannons, and a toddler pool. Sports and leisure facilities include a climbing wall, indoor tennis and squash courts, a beach volleyball court, and a large playground. While swimming and relaxing in the pools, you can enjoy dramatic views of the towering Wilder Kaiser mountains. Address: 1 Wimm, Ellmau/Tyrol A-6352.
Juppi's Enchanted Forest (Juppi Zauberwald)
A short ride on the Reitherkogelbahn cable car from Reith im Alpbachtal
leads to a 2 km circular adventure trail featuring game and activity stations including slides, swings, a witch's treehouse, a goat petting area, climbing wall, tipi tent, trampolines, giant hammocks, a swinging suspension bridge, and additional surprises.
Nearby is another charming amusement park named "Lauserland," reached via the Wiedersbergerhornbahn cable car departing from Alpbach. Best suited for young children, the park has giant slides, a trampoline, swings, and water and sand play areas. Address: Hnr. 311, 6236 Alpbach.
Tiroler Bienenwelt (Tyrolean Bee World)
A museum located in a 400-year-old farmhouse entirely dedicated to the world of bees, their fascinating lifestyle, beekeeping methods, and bee-derived medicinal products. Here you will find answers to curious questions such as: How many kilometers does a bee fly each day? How many truckloads of pollen does a bee collect in its lifetime? How do bees maintain the right hive temperature? You will learn about beekeepers' work and try it firsthand. Hourly guided tours and workshops are held, primarily focused on apitherapy (natural healing products), candle making, and coloring contests related to hive products. You can receive treatments or buy natural health products at the adjoining shop.

Learn everything you ever wanted to know about producing schnapps and other spirits, accompanied by tastings.
The Erber family has 400 years of experience producing schnapps from forest berries and aromatic fruits. All pools are heated to 33°C. For toddlers, there are paddling pools and organized activity equipment. The site includes beach volleyball courts, tennis, and numerous sporting activities. Parents can enjoy the Roman sauna and the Isla Sola: relaxing pools with seawater, underwater music, tropical rain showers, massage jets, and other pampering features. Sauna and Isla Sola require an extra fee.

Zauberwinkel Ropes Course
Austria's largest ropes course, featuring 17 adventure stations, all situated 14-21 meters above ground among tree canopies in a charming alpine setting.

In Wörgl there is also Pit-Pat mini-golf, an impressive rollerblading and skateboard park, and bike paths. In short: a favorite destination for sports and action enthusiasts. Those seeking serenity will find it in the herb gardens or the modern open-air sculpture park (Skulpturenpark) in the town of Niederau.
Attractions in the Zillertal Valley
Mayrhofen
Mayrhofen is a picturesque, quaint ski town in the Zillertal Valley in the Tyrol region. Mayrhofen is located about an hour's drive from Tyrol's capital, Innsbruck.
The town offers a variety of winter and summer sporting activities such as skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, cycling, horseback riding, paragliding, hiking, glacier climbing, a gold mine, and more. Mayrhofen is located near the Hintertux Glacier, which stands at 3,250 meters, where skiing is possible all year round. Mayrhofen sits between Mount Penken and Mount Ahorn, providing 170 km of ski slopes in winter and hiking and biking trails in summer. The modern cable car to Ahorn, departing south of town, carries up to 160 passengers and is the largest in Austria. Mayrhofen is especially popular among snowboarders and features a large snowpark sponsored by Vans. Snow lovers will be delighted to discover that even in mid-summer, snow fun is readily accessible.

Stams Abbey (Stift Stams)
An impressive abbey located in the Upper Inn Valley, south of the Inn River, 35 km (about 30 minutes) west of Innsbruck. Its two rounded onion-domed towers can be spotted from afar. Founded in 1273 primarily as a burial site for the rulers of Tyrol, it became the residence of Cistercian monks over centuries. It was originally built in Romanesque style, but after being destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in the 16th century in Baroque style. Today, 20 monks reside in the abbey, which serves as a spiritual and educational center and is regarded as one of Tyrol's most significant cultural heritage sites. In the abbey shop, you can purchase jams, juices, and other products made by the monks from local fruits, as well as schnapps distilled on-site and freshly baked bread. Stuibenfall Waterfalls
These two-tier cascades are the highest waterfalls in Tyrol, plunging 159 meters. They feature powerful flow, reaching up to 2,000 liters per second at peak snowmelt season. The most scenic approach is a 1-hour walk from the parking lot of Ötzidorf village (an expansive archaeological park with exhibits and demonstrations of "Ötzi the Iceman") up to Niederthai. Five viewing terraces and a suspension bridge along the trail offer spectacular views of the roaring falls from various angles. Those seeking an easier walk can start at Niederthai (which has a large car park) on a 15-minute trail that crosses the suspension bridge to the falls and returns. Every Wednesday from May to October, the waterfalls are illuminated after dark.
The waterfalls are situated in the northern part of the Ötztal tourism region, which is also famous for its wide selection of active recreation and extreme sports (kayaking, rafting, paragliding, rock climbing). This area also offers its own regional attraction card including lake swimming, cable car ascents, scenic toll roads, museums, mini-golf, pit-pat, wellness spas, and swimming pools. The Town of Seefeld
Located about 20 km northwest of Innsbruck, the region is called the Olympic Region because it hosted events for the Winter Olympic Games twice (in 1964 and 1976), which took place in Innsbruck.

The floral parade moves through the town center amidst thousands of cheering spectators who vote for the best design. Treats and gifts are distributed to children during the colorful celebration.
Even on non-festival days, strolling through the picturesque center is delightful, with decorative buildings, pedestrian streets lined with charming boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Leutasch Spirit Gorge (Leutascher Geisterklamm)
A hike on well-secured walkways through an impressive, rushing gorge, passing high bridges, deep chasms, and forest trails. There are two paths:
The Red Trail, named "Gorge Spirit Trail," is about 3 km long and takes about 2 hours to complete. It is an easy walk suited for families (not suitable for strollers). An 800-meter segment consists of steel walkways and platforms elevated 43 meters above the rushing river. The trail starts at the visitor center and cafe, about 9 km east of the village of Leutasch.
The Blue Trail ("Goblin Trail") is shorter (1.9 km) and begins at the cafe and info center on the German side of the gorge near Mittenwald. From the Blue Trail, a 200-meter spur (Green Trail) leads deep into the gorge to a 23-meter waterfall. Both trails feature informational boards explaining the geology and nature, along with legends of spirits and goblins said to inhabit the gorge.

Tiroler Zugspitz Arena
The peak of the Zugspitze is shared between Austria and Germany, with the national border crossing its summit. Located about 83 km northwest of Innsbruck, the jagged peak can be ascended from either the German or the Austrian side. Visitors staying in Tyrol usually prefer the Austrian lift. At 2,962 meters, it is Germany's highest peak, crowned with a large gilded cross. The Austrian cable car is the oldest on the mountain, operating since 1926. The summit offers unobstructed panoramic views across four countries, as it towers above all surrounding peaks. On clear days, you can see the Grossglockner mountain to the south and the Munich television tower to the north. The ascent is via the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn cable car departing from Ehrwald, the largest town in the area. The valley station features a museum showcasing the cable car's mechanics and engines.
