California's Highway 1 is one of the most popular scenic roads for a trip in the US, combining impressive sea views with hiking trails, wildlife viewing, charming towns, and many options for active vacations.
Monterey and Carmel
These are two small and well-maintained towns situated along a rugged and beautiful coastline. They are separated by a famous scenic road that winds along the shoreline called "17 Miles Drive," which is 27 km long. Driving on this road costs 7.5 dollars per car as the area is designated as a national site. In return, you will receive a map detailing 21 points of interest along the way. For example: "Bird Rock" where you can watch eagles nesting near the shore, "Seal Rock," "The Lone Cypress," and more. Allocate at least an hour for driving this road (including stops to look at the view). Throughout the drive, you will pass luxury villas used as vacation homes for California's wealthy and large-scale golf courses.
South of the town of Carmel, right before entering it on Highway 1, lies a nature reserve called "Point Lobos State Reserve," featuring walking trails that lead to magnificent coastal cliffs. This reserve is considered one of the areas with the most beautiful cliff views in the world. The reserve has rich vegetation, and you can spot sea lions and sea otters on the shore. Many seabirds, including cormorants, nest on the shore. The reserve is open until 17:00 in the winter months.
The most impressive part of Highway 1 is located south of the town of Carmel and is about 110 km long.
The road winds between high mountains on one side and a deep abyss on the other. The road is narrow and not easy to drive, and in the section between Carmel and San Simeon, there are almost no settlements or restaurants along the way. Drive carefully, preferably during daylight hours, and stop occasionally at the pullouts scattered along the way to observe the view. The road is two-lane, one lane in each direction, and also includes steep drops and bridges over the abyss. It is recommended to stop at a place called "Big Sur," which is a lovely nature reserve offering a stunning view of the Big Sur River and the historic lighthouse on the seashore. It is worth walking on the organized trails among the redwood trees in the reserve. The reserve is open to visitors daily from 9:00 AM until dark.
Highway 1
♦ Recommended accommodations along the Highway 1 route
In order to see the best along the magical Highway 1, it is recommended to dedicate at least two nights to the trip, preferably in two different locations along the road. You should book places far enough in advance (especially on weekends) because demand is high and it is difficult to get rooms during the season, especially between San Simeon and Carmel. You can stay in Monterey or Carmel for one night and the next day in San Simeon or Pismo Beach.

The Town and the Rock - Morro Bay
About 45 km south of San Simeon is the town of Morro Bay, which is a photogenic tourist town situated on a bay of the same name at the southern end of Highway 1. The main attraction in the town is a giant rock in the water (connected to the town by a narrow strip of land). The rock is a volcanic remnant from tens of millions of years ago.
It is recommended to go on a guided electric bike tour in the Morro Bay area: Guided E-Bike Tour of Morro Bay
In which you will tour the beautiful beaches north of Morro Rock, near Morro Rock, and south through the town to Morro Bay State Park.
Many birds nest there and it is surrounded by calm sea waters. In the middle of the bay is a raft on which hundreds of sea lions rest. Boats with travelers depart from the harbor toward the raft, and kayakers, sailors, and paddleboarders also navigate the bay.
The beach next to the rock is sandy and popular with surfers as well as swimmers.
You can walk on a hiking trail near the rock, look at it from the town while walking along the harbor, or while eating seafood and fish from a restaurant in the harbor. A must-visit destination for anyone visiting California!
San Luis Obispo
About another 22 km south of Morro Bay on Highway 1 is San Luis Obispo.
The city has a variety of restaurants, hotels, and large shops, making it a suitable place to stop for a meal or even for an overnight stay. Even if you are not staying in the city, enter the fancy "Madonna Inn" motel. Each room has a different and "kitsch" design, and it is nice to walk around the colorful lobby and even in its special public restrooms.
Pismo Beach
About 20 km south of San Luis Obispo on Highway 101, you arrive at another coastal town with sandy beaches and a bustling fishing pier. It is worth walking along the pier to watch the fishermen and the view from the sea toward the land and the surrounding sea, where many surfers can also be seen on the waves.
The surrounding sandy beaches are of course also suitable for swimming, with lifeguard services along them.
Near the beginning of the pier is a playground with slides for the benefit of the children in the group.
Coastal Reserve - Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve
Near Pismo Beach, about two km south of it on the seashore, is a coastal reserve where an elevated wooden path has been installed above the coastal vegetation with beautiful yellow and pink flowers. Near the reserve is also a sandy beach with lifeguard services.
The Town of Lompoc - Flower Fields and Murals
South of Pismo Beach about 76 km (and about 34 km west of Solvang), lies the town of Lompoc, known for the large colorful flower fields nearby. In recent years, and especially during the Corona period, the demand for flowers decreased, so during this time, some of the fields were converted to other agricultural crops, although there are still some beautiful flower fields nearby. Every year on the last weekend of June, a flower festival is held in the town, which is worth seeing if you are in the area. The festival includes a flower parade and a fair with stalls and entertainment for visitors.
The blooming season is from late May until mid-August, with the peak at the end of June.
Another attraction in this town is the many murals scattered throughout its historic part. These murals are different from the random murals you see in other cities. The goal here is to tell and commemorate various historical events related to the town, with the aim of encouraging tourism. The first mural painted refers to its flower industry. Next to each mural is also a sign explaining the nature of the event the mural represents.
The following mural, for example, is called "Fields of Gold" and represents the period when the plant from which mustard was produced was grown here until 1940.
The Town of Solvang
From there, continue on Highway 101 (which is a fast and good highway) to Solvang, which is a charming and picturesque town established by Danish immigrants at the beginning of the century.
It is a replica of a typical Scandinavian village with windmills, a church, small streets, recommended bakeries, and souvenir shops.
The night lighting in the place is lovely.
It is recommended to dedicate a few hours to it in the morning (in addition to an evening tour) and of course eat breakfast in one of its cafes / creperies / pancake houses.
It is also worth getting to know the culinary side of the town on a guided food tour: Solvang Food and Photo Tour which includes several food tastings, wine and beer tastings, soft drinks, and photography tips.
Ostrich Farm
About 4 km west of Solvang on the main road before arriving at the town, there is an ostrich farm called Ostrichland USA where you can feed ostriches and also emus with seeds you buy on site. An experience for children and also for adults.
Santa Ynez
Santa Ynez is located less than ten minutes' drive northeast of Solvang, and the town is known for the wineries scattered around it. It is great to visit one of the wineries in the Santa Ynez wine valley and taste their wines. There is a recommended guided tour among the wineries in the area for wine tasting with bicycles so you can feel the nature around you and also get some exercise: Santa Ynez Valley Biking and Wine Tasting Tour.
The City of Santa Barbara
Not far from Solvang lies Santa Barbara, which is a beautiful and well-maintained city built in Spanish style, and it is recommended to visit.
A recommended way to know the culinary side of the city is on a guided food tour: Downtown SB Walking Food & Drink Tour
In this city, there is a long and beautiful fishing pier that is recommended to walk on and see the nearby beaches from it.
The most recommended and active way to tour Santa Barbara is with an electric bike tour: Santa Barbara Electric Bike Tour. The tour is two and a half hours long and passes through landscapes, promenades, beaches, villas, famous buildings, and viewpoints.
Weather
Regarding the weather: usually the weather is pleasant, and it is definitely possible to carry out the route I suggested in all months of the year. However, occasionally in winter when there are storms, especially strong winds, the road is damaged and in some cases even closed to traffic. Therefore, if the weather is unstable, it is recommended to check the condition of the road. In any case, it is worth leaving early so as not to drive on Highway 1 in the dark. First, it is very unpleasant and unsafe since the road is narrow and winding, and second, you will miss the main thing: the magnificent view of the sea and the cliffs.
