General
San Antonio is the most visited city in Texas. It features famous historical sites, amusement and animal parks alongside markets and the famous River Walk.
It is the second-largest city by population in Texas with about 1.5 million residents and the 7th largest in the United States. The city was founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission, then passed to Mexican control until the United States annexed Texas to the Union in 1845, leading to a war between America and Mexico, which the latter lost.
The city's economy is based on the many military bases nearby, a supporting healthcare system, government jobs, civil services and financial institutions, the oil and gas industry, and tourism.
The city's tourist sites, both ancient and modern, its amusement parks, large convention center, sports events, major rodeo fair, and its weather attract over 30 million tourists a year!
Location and Transportation
San Antonio is located about an hour and a half drive (approx. 120 km) south of Austin, the capital of Texas. It is about four and a half hours (450 km) south of Dallas and about 3 hours (320 km) west of Houston.
The city has an international airport: San Antonio International Airport, with flights from many destinations in the United States and Mexico served by most American airlines.

The River Walk
This is one of the city's most bustling entertainment areas with plenty of music and atmosphere. On both sides of the river, there is an abundance of restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels, and walking trails. Boats filled with tourists sail along the river.
Historic Sites in San Antonio
The Alamo
The city has several ancient sites declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. The most famous ancient site in the city is the Alamo, which was a Spanish mission and fortress built in the 18th century. It was the site of an important historical battle in 1836, known as the Battle of the Alamo, where the Mexicans defeated the few Texan soldiers in the fortress. A mission from 1755. The mission is housed in a building that has been well-preserved for over two hundred years. This is the oldest unrestored stone church in America.
Observation Tower
San Antonio features an observation tower called The Tower of the Americas, which can be seen from almost every corner of the city. The tower was built for a World's Fair held in the city. The tower stands 229 meters high and offers a panoramic view of the city, including the Alamo area. At its top, there is an observation deck with a 4D theater and a revolving restaurant.
Mexican Market
El Mercado is a Mexican market considered the largest of its kind outside Mexico. It spans three blocks and features about 100 restaurants, shops, handicraft stalls, food stands, fruits and vegetables. The venue also hosts many Hispanic festivals.

In the summer, it is hot and humid in San Antonio, with an average maximum of 32-35 degrees Celsius. In the winter, it is cool with an average maximum of 16-18 degrees, while nights are cold, averaging 3 to 5 degrees.
In early spring and late autumn, temperatures are most comfortable at 22-24 degrees.
Summer is the wettest season and winter the driest. May-June and October are the rainier months with an average of 102-105 mm per month. December through February are the driest months with an average of 45-49 mm per month.
When to Visit San Antonio
From May to October, despite the summer heat and humidity, this is the busier tourist season in San Antonio and therefore also more expensive for hotels and attractions, as well as more crowded.
From November to April, temperatures are more comfortable. This is also the driest season of the year, although winter is a bit cold. Accommodation prices are more attractive, and the city is less crowded.
