General
When you say "Texas," an image of an arid desert with oil pumps and cowboys immediately comes to mind. Austin surprises everyone who visits with an abundance of water and hills with green vegetation, alongside vibrant streets full of young people and a sophisticated atmosphere.
Austin, the capital of Texas, is a bustling university city that has become highly popular and sought after in recent years by leading high-tech companies that have moved their offices there (earning it the nickname "Silicon Hills"). Many students and individuals are moving there to enjoy the advantages it offers over other prominent locations in the US. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States over the last decade. Real estate prices are cheaper than in the San Francisco and New York areas (though they are now rising quite rapidly).
The city is home to about one million residents, a mix of government employees, students, musicians, high-tech and digital media workers, and blue-collar workers. It serves as the economic and cultural center of a metropolitan area populated by about 2.3 million residents. Cultural life thrives, especially live music clubs that attract many young people. It is considered the live music capital of the world with more than 250 venues offering rock, jazz, hip-hop, punk, or Latin music. In the evening, an entire street (6th Street) turns into an amazing pedestrian zone of clubs offering a variety of music for every taste and age—just take your pick.
The Texas Lone Star symbol in front of the Texas History Museum:
The Colorado River crosses the city, and along with several nearby lakes, there is no shortage of recreation and vacation options including water sports, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and more.
Near the city are green hills with historic towns and more than two dozen wineries where you can hike in nature on many trails, all in pleasant weather with about 230 sunny days a year and an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
Visitors to the city are recommended to stay here for at least 4 days in one of the many hotels in the city. Those coming to enjoy the variety of clubs should arrive on the weekend when they are most active.

Itinerary for a tour of Central Austin from the University to the Capitol and the SoCo District
The University of Texas at Austin
The large university, founded in 1883, currently has about 50,000 students (!) for undergraduate and graduate degrees and employs about 24,000 staff and faculty members. Such a large number of students naturally affects the character of the city, making it younger and resulting in a multitude of entertainment venues, sports facilities, and restaurants suitable for young people.
The university spans many buildings in the heart of the city and also has two large sports fields and an art museum (Blanton Museum of Art). The many buildings in the university complex are linked by a branching system of underground tunnels with a total length of about 10 km, which is not open to the general public. The university operates two radio stations: KUT for news and information and KUTX for music. In the heart of the ancient and well-kept university stands an impressive tall tower called the UT Tower. South of the tower stands a statue of George Washington looking towards the Capitol building.
Alphabet letters in several languages, including Hebrew, are embossed on the walls of the tower. The university has gardens with beautiful statues and also a small pond with turtles dedicated to the memory of the victims of a deadly shooting incident in 1966 that occurred at the tower.
Near the tower is a bronze statue by the famous local sculptor Umlauf (Austin has a garden dedicated to his sculptures) depicting two athletes running and passing a torch.
Bullock Texas State History Museum
South of the George Washington statue is a beautiful fountain with statues called Littlefield Fountain, which is actually located at the southern entrance of the university. The fountain was built in memory of the fallen of World War I by an Italian sculptor.
After the fountain is the recommended Bullock Texas State History Museum. The three floors of the museum present the history of the state of Texas as well as changing exhibitions. The museum also includes two cinemas, one an IMAX theater with the largest screen in Texas and the other a 4D theater. In front of the museum is a large star statue, the symbol of the state of Texas. Museum address: 1800 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701, United States
The street east of this museum and continuing south to the Capitol is called Congress Avenue, and it is undergoing renovation to turn it into a park with a beautiful promenade up to the Congress building.
The Texas State Capitol
About 600 meters south of the history museum is the Capitol building, which is open to the public. You can enter and tour many parts of it for free without a prior reservation. It is possible to do a self-guided tour, although there are usually guided tours available that are recommended to join. The Capitol building is very impressive and is even larger than the one in Washington D.C. (like everything in Texas, which always has to be the "biggest").
You can climb the stairs in the central hall where the impressive ceiling is located, and the floor is also beautifully decorated.
You can enter certain rooms, the library,
a hospitality room, and even the Senate Chamber and listen to the speakers there. Address: 1100 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701, United States
Bats at the Congress Avenue Bridge
The Congress Avenue Bridge features a very special attraction. Hundreds of thousands of bats nest under the bridge and around sunset, they emerge from their hiding place in a giant swarm that flies over the city. Hundreds of people, locals and tourists alike, come to watch this spectacle. They stand on the bridge, under it, and around it, also in boats sailing in the river near the bridge. Everyone waits a long time from before sunset until after, hoping to see this show. Sometimes they come out after sunset in small numbers, making them hard to see. It doesn't always happen, depending on the weather and season. In the summer, the spectacle is more common and very unique. Bridge address: Congress Avenue Bridge, Congress Ave, Austin

Music Clubs and the Sixth Street Pedestrian Zone
Towards every evening on weekends (Thursday to Saturday), 6th Street becomes a pedestrian mall. This street is packed with pubs, bars, restaurants, and bustling clubs playing loud music, some with live performances, crowded with revelers. The eastern part from Congress Avenue to I-35 is considered bolder and is nicknamed Dirty 6th. This is the iconic street of Austin, which gives Austin its reputation as the live music capital of the world. The western part is more solid and suitable for a slightly older crowd. Address: W 6th St & Congress Ave, Austin
The Trendy SoCo District
This district, whose name is short for South Congress Avenue, is famous for its boutiques, trendy accommodations, and restaurants. The most famous shop there, which draws many visitors from afar, is a famous boot store called Allens Boots, which has over 4,000 boots in very beautiful and unique designs with prices reaching hundreds and even a thousand dollars per pair. They also sell cowboy hats, belts, buckles, and more. Store address: 1522 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704, United States
Covert Park
In one of Austin's neighborhoods on a hill/mountain called Mount Bonnell is Covert Park. From the parking lot, a hiking trail leads up stairs to a beautiful observation deck overlooking the area and the winding Colorado River flowing nearby. Along the river are luxurious mansions with manicured lawns and gardens, including private yacht moorings. Opposite, spanning the horizon, are green hills covered in trees, between which the rooftops of Austin's wealthiest villas peek out. This is one of the most beautiful views in the city.
From the observation deck, a short trail (about 250 meters) leads north down a gentle slope, offering additional viewpoints of the surroundings. Address: 3800 Mt Bonnell Rd, Austin, TX 78731, United States
Mayfield Park
A two-minute drive south of Covert Park is another park called Mayfield Park with gardens featuring hiking trails, diverse vegetation, several small fish ponds, and a historic house donated to the public by Mrs. Mary Mayfield. The special attraction in the park is the many peacocks that roam freely on the trees and rooftops, displaying their magnificent feathers.
The site can also host private events such as weddings or small gatherings, during which it is closed to the public. Address: 3505 W 35th St, Austin, TX 78703, United States
Zilker Park
A large and popular urban park, the "Central Park" of Austin, located near Downtown Austin. The park is situated next to the Colorado River at the confluence of Barton Creek. Inside the park is the Barton Springs Pool, one of the city's most famous attractions. This is a massive municipal swimming pool about 200 meters long and 25-45 meters wide, fed by spring water at a constant temperature of 20-21 degrees Celsius year-round. The pool is a contained section of Barton Creek, and water flows continuously through it.
Further east along the creek are other free spots where you can bathe in the water and sail in kayaks and paddleboards available for rent on-site.
The park features botanical gardens and the charming Umlauf Sculpture Garden is also located within the extensive park grounds.
Hiking Trail - Violet Crown Trail
Near the pool is a recommended hiking trail called Violet Crown Trail, about 3 miles long each way, which runs along the river through rich vegetation, fields of beautiful wildflowers, small waterfalls, and reaches several quiet spots where you can dip in the river.
Families with children (and many dogs) visit here. A 1-mile walk is sufficient to find several wonderful spots for bathing for the whole family. Address: 2207 Lou Neff Rd, Austin, TX 78746, United States
Umlauf Sculpture Garden
The sculpture garden is located in Zilker Park. Most of the sculptures in the garden were created by famous local sculptor Charles Umlauf. The garden features a hiking trail among trees and vegetation, lined with bronze and stone sculptures, mostly of women, men, and animals in various poses. Address: 605 Azie Morton Rd, Austin, TX 78704, United States
McKinney Falls State Park
A state park located in south Austin. The park has two waterfalls, upper and lower. It is recommended to park near the upper falls and hike an easy trail to the lower falls. It is best to come when it hasn't rained recently, otherwise the water turns brown from soil erosion, and avoid very cloudy days as the falls lose some of their beauty. You can walk on the large flat rocks near the falls and it's nice to bathe in the natural pools. It is also a favorite destination for birdwatchers due to the diversity of birds seen there. The park also has many areas equipped for picnics. Address: 5808 McKinney Falls Pkwy, Austin, TX 78744, United States
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
The gardens are located about 15 km southwest of Central Austin. These gardens, founded by Lady Bird (the nature-loving wife of President Johnson), are maintained by the University of Texas and are botanical gardens for wildflowers. Site staff collect wildflower seeds, plant them, cultivate them, and preserve them. The site features an ancient tower you can climb to overlook the scenery and a hiking trail lined with a rich variety of beautiful wildflowers.
The garden also has beautiful benches designed in the shape of butterflies, flowers, and birds. Music performances occasionally take place, and families and couples bring blankets and picnic baskets to the beautiful gardens while listening to music. Food and drinks can be purchased at a food truck on-site. Address: 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX 78739, United States
Touring the Lake Travis Area
Lake Travis is a man-made lake created by the construction of the Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River. Water sports are well-developed on this lake and many boats sail in its waters. Surrounding the lake are high-quality residential neighborhoods, and many state parks have been established around its shores. Admission to the parks involves a modest fee that allows entry to all parks in the area on the same day.
recommended parks with swimming beaches and facilities around the lake:
Mansfield Dam Park
The site features picnic tables and a swimming beach with easy access. Address: 4370 Mansfield Dam Park Rd., Austin, TX 78732, United States
Hippie Hollow Park
A wonderful beach with very clear and calm water. Access to the water is not the most convenient, through rocks and stairs. Along the beach in various corners, nudists—mostly men or couples—settle in. Address: 7000 Comanche Trail, Austin, TX 78732, United States
The lake is large and winding and has many other parks with picnic tables, restrooms, and beaches where you can dip in the water.
Electric Bike Food Tour in Austin
A recommended and enjoyable way to tour Austin is a bike tour by BikeTexas Tours, which combines the cycling trip with a food tour at lunchtime, so you both discover tourist attractions and get to know the culinary side of the city. The company also offers a morning tour that includes brunch. The tour lasts about 4 hours. The starting point is near Downtown.
The ride starts along the river in the Lady Bird Johnson promenade area, passes a dam, then continues through beautiful scenery to the Congress Avenue Bridge downtown. Along the ride, you stop for viewpoints and anecdotal stories about the city, its history, culture, and of course culinary scene. On the main street, Congress Avenue, you stop at the first restaurant called "Cooper's," which is a branch of a very famous restaurant located about an hour's drive north of Austin, renowned for its recommended BBQ; I particularly recommend the brisket. You taste different types of meats including chicken, sausages, and very tasty brisket, along with side dishes of salads and potatoes. Generous amounts of food.
From there, the tour continues downtown to a brewery with Mexican food and finishes at a third stop serving a sweet dessert.
Other tours by the company include cycling trips focused on music and the clubs Austin is famous for. These tours are led by musicians or people from the music industry. The tour lasts 3 hours.
