Oregon Coast Trip - Northern Region
♦ Routes (free): Detailed travel itineraries in USA
From Lincoln City to Newport
The reputation of the Oregon coast has spread far and wide thanks to the rugged scenery abundant with cliffs, islets, and a variety of marine animals. People do not come to the Oregon coast to bathe in the water, but rather to be impressed by the power of nature and at the same time enjoy charming towns full of markets, galleries, fishermen, atmosphere, and a wealth of picturesque lighthouses. The amount of rain in the area is large, and near the coast, it is often foggy, which adds a special touch to the rapidly changing landscape. This is an excellent place to visit in the summer for those looking for an escape from the oppressive heat in Israel...
Below is a description of a travel route along the Oregon coast from the town of Lincoln City, which is located in the north - southwest of Portland, to the town of Gold Beach in the south. The length of the route is about 325 km. Driving on this route is on Highway 101, which is close to the shore. On this trip, there are many stops at various attractions along the way, at beaches and in towns, including short walking tours in some of the places.
For such a route, it is worth dedicating about three days. One day for a trip in the Lincoln City area to Newport, the second day for a trip from Newport south to the sand dunes park near the town of Florence, and the third day for a trip in the town of Bandon and south to the town of Gold Beach.

Lincoln City
In the city of Lincoln City, there is a selection of motels, many of them right on the coastline. It's nice to wake up in the morning with a view of the sea and the sound of the waves that accompanies your stay in the place. It's worth starting the day with a refreshing morning walk along the beach, a sandy beach with a cliff on which the hotels are located.
After walking south from the city center for a distance of about 2 km, you reach Siletz Bay. On one bank of the bay, many fishermen are scattered, fishing for crabs with special traps loaded with chicken parts. You can rent equipment at a shop near the beach and try your luck at fishing. On the shore opposite this bank, dozens of seals lie without any disturbance.
Nearby, a street (SW-51St) begins with a small dock and the famous Mo's restaurant, known throughout the area and having additional branches in towns to the south. The restaurant is known for its seafood, and usually, there is a queue to enter. Further down the street (and also in the adjacent streets), decorated with beautiful flower baskets, there are cute cafes,
various galleries, and also glassworking galleries and workshops where anyone can learn and try their hand at working and blowing glass creations.
In the town, there is also a lake named "Devil Lake," which can be reached by turning off Highway 101 onto 14th Street. There is a small swimming beach and lawns for picnics. On the lake shore, there is a fishing dock with a view of the lake, where beautiful houses are scattered along its shores.
For those interested in shopping, the city has a Tanger Factory Outlet center. It's important to note that Oregon is a state without sales tax, so it is very worthwhile to shop there—an immediate saving of 6-8 percent compared to other states in the US. For gambling enthusiasts, the town also has a large casino full of tables and machines.

Driving South from Lincoln toward Newport
On the scenic drive on Highway 101, there are stopping points to view the beautiful bays and the sea dotted with rocky islands. A recommended point is Cape Foulweather Myrtle Wood. The weather tends to change rapidly; sometimes you see nothing because of the fogs, and suddenly when it scatters, a lovely landscape is revealed.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse
This lighthouse, located north of Newport, has been operating continuously since 1873 and is a tourist attraction; at its entrance, there is a spacious visitor center. It is worth parking at the visitor center and not near the lighthouse because it is usually crowded and there is no parking, and also because there is a scenic trail from the visitor center leading to the lighthouse (about a ten-minute walk). Along the entire path, which passes near the shore, there are plenty of cliffs where thousands of birds nest. You can also notice seals resting at the foot of the cliffs. You can visit inside the lighthouse, but keep in mind that there is usually a queue of about fifteen minutes at the entrance. Near the lighthouse, a trail climbs to the top of a nearby hill from which you can see a panoramic view of the area, and it is especially beautiful to see the lighthouse and its surroundings from a bird's eye view. In the summer, the whole hill blooms with a variety of beautiful flowers, most of them with spectacular purple blooming.
The City of Newport
While traveling along the coast and watching the natural scenery, it is worth diversifying the trip with a city tour as well and seeing the attractions available in the cities along the coast and also enjoying a better selection of restaurants.
In the city of Newport, the recommended place to visit is the harbor area. On the harbor's main street, there is a fish market, restaurants, galleries, and souvenir shops. The walls of the harbor buildings were used to paint giant murals of boats, fish, and everything related to the sea. Near one of the docks, you can see seals resting peacefully. There is an undersea observatory for corals and underwater creatures on the street, a wax museum of animals, and "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" museum. On the docks, there are fishermen trying to fish for crabs. From the dock near the undersea observatory, you can also view and see the arch bridge in all its glory.
