A Trip to Vigo, Spain
The city of Vigo is a large port city located in northwestern Spain. Many cruise ships sailing along the coast of Western Europe call at this port. The port in Vigo is right in the city center, and from the cruise decks, you can look out over the city streets and the A Laxe shopping center. You can explore the city independently on foot from the port and discover its unique and iconic architecture.
Among the city's top sights is Porta do Sol, one of the seven main original gates to the old city walls. There you will find El Sireno, a sculpture of a half-man, half-fish creature that symbolizes Vigo's deep connection to the sea.

The walk offers one of the finest vantage points over the city, making the climb well worth the effort. On the mountain, you will find archaeological remains of the area's earliest settlers, along with ancient fortress walls and historical monuments.
When heading back down the mountain, take the wide Gran Vía street, lined with numerous shops, restaurants, and artistic sculptures.

A great short excursion outside the city is to the town of Baiona (Baiona la Real). This historic coastal town lies about 20 km southwest of Vigo. In the past, its port played a significant role in Columbus' voyages, being the first port to receive news of the discovery of America.
Today it is a charming resort town featuring a picturesque harbor, a historic quarter ideal for exploring on foot, and a wide selection of cafes and restaurants overlooking the bay.
Another excellent day trip option is to the historic city of Santiago de Compostela, located about an hour's drive from Vigo. It is the capital of Spain's Galicia autonomous community and the most visited city in the region, famed as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. According to tradition, the remains of Saint James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles, are buried here at the site where the monumental Santiago Cathedral was later built.
The old quarter is exceptionally impressive, filled with centuries-old history and remarkable architectural heritage.
