Travel Guide to São Miguel Island in the Azores
General Background
São Miguel is the largest and most visited of all the Portuguese Azores islands, as well as the most diverse among them.
The island spans an area of 760 sq km. It is also the most populated island in the Azores, home to approximately 140,000 residents (out of about 250,000 across all the islands combined).

The airport on São Miguel Island is located right next to the island's largest city, Ponta Delgada. Direct flights take about two and a half hours from Lisbon or Porto.
Flights are operated by two Portuguese carriers—TAP (the national carrier) and Azores Airlines (the regional carrier)—as well as budget carrier Ryanair. Airfares are generally very affordable, particularly when booked well in advance.
There are also direct flights from select European cities such as Berlin and Düsseldorf, as well as seasonal services from Amsterdam, London, Brussels, Madrid, and other rotating destinations, primarily during the summer.
From the United States, regular direct flights operate out of Boston.

The City of Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada serves as an ideal launchpad for exploring the entire island. Staying here allows convenient day trips to different regions each day. As the island's central hub, it holds the largest concentration of hotels, a vibrant dining scene, tour agencies, shopping streets, and a contemporary shopping center. It is well worth dedicating at least half a day to exploring the town on foot.
The city center revolves around the main square showcasing the historic city gates (Portas da Cidade), a three-arched landmark that serves as the emblem of Ponta Delgada. The square is adorned with mature endemic trees and faces the parish church of Igreja do Santo Cristo. Along the waterfront runs an extensive seaside promenade lined with restaurants, boat operators for whale-watching expeditions, land tours, and guided walking excursions.
