General Background
The Zlatibor region in southwestern Serbia is the best area for nature, recreation, and action in Serbia.
The region boasts numerous national parks, mountains, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls alongside picturesque towns, caves, fortresses, and a plethora of attractions: ziplines, kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking, ATVs, cliff climbing, alongside a dinosaur park, amusement rides, and open-air museums. It is an affordable and fantastic family destination featuring friendly locals, wonderful food, and a wide variety of accommodation options of all types and standards at attractive rates compared to most European countries and even compared to the rest of the Balkan states.
Zlatibor is a popular ski destination in the winter, a nature hiking, trekking, action, and lake swimming haven in the summer, and a pastoral retreat boasting enchanting foliage colors during autumn.
The town of Zlatibor, located in the heart of the region, serves as an ideal base for star tours (hub-and-spoke trips) throughout this magical district. It is recommended to stay for at least 5 nights in order to experience the best of the town, its immediate surroundings, and the impressive nature located within up to an hour and a half drive in each direction. Zlatibor is situated at an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level, with the surrounding mountain peaks reaching up to about 1,500 meters (Tornik peak). Zlatibor is a fairly small town with only about 3,000 permanent residents; however, during the tourist seasons (especially in summer and winter) it is vibrant and teeming with visitors. For several years, it has been undergoing significant construction growth, with more and more hotels and attractions being established.
At the center of town is a charming little pedestrian promenade lined with cafes, restaurants, shops, stalls, and street performances. At the end of the promenade lies a lovely small artificial lake named Zlatiborsko jezero, where you can go boating and have fun during the summer months, and enjoy ice skating in the winter. Adjacent to the lake is an inflatable park and trampolines, especially suitable for young children. Near the other end of the promenade is a small amusement park featuring several rides, such as a chair swing carousel and a pirate ship. The town also features an abundance of children's playgrounds.

Weather and When to Visit
The weather in Zlatibor, situated at 1,000 meters above sea level, is alpine, with fresh mountain air, sunny summer days, and heavy snow in the winter.
Summer temperatures are pleasant, with an average high of 23 degrees Celsius in July–August. Spring and autumn are cool, while winter is cold and snowy with an average high of 2 degrees Celsius in January.
Rain can fall during any month of the year, including summer, with June being the wettest month and October the driest.
The best season to visit Zlatibor (for those not planning to ski or play in the snow) is during the summer and autumn months, from May through October. In summer, you can enjoy a wide array of active water sports as well as swimming in lakes and rivers, while in autumn, the vibrant fall foliage dressing the mountains in red, orange, and yellow reflects upon the clear lake waters, adding beauty to this forested, water-rich region.
Most tourist sites in the region close at the end of October, and temperatures drop significantly around that time; therefore, visiting the Zlatibor area from November to the end of April is not recommended unless you are seeking a ski vacation.
How to Get There
Zlatibor is located about a three-hour drive (230 km) southwest of Belgrade, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The best way to reach it is by rental car. Alternatively, it is very convenient to take guided tours from Belgrade.

Mount Tornik Tornik
A ski resort in the winter and an active recreation and nature touring center in the summer. At the summit during the summer, there is an adventure park for children featuring an alpine coaster (Bob na šinama), zipline, and tubing (Tjubing—sliding down the mountain in inner tubes). The summit offers walking and cycling trails as well as magnificent panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains. Currently, the summit can be reached via a relatively short cable car located about a 15-minute drive southwest of central Zlatibor. This cable car is inactive in spring and autumn. Zlatibor Gold Gondola Lift
will open, running from central Zlatibor all the way to the mountaintop and operating year-round. Spanning 9 kilometers, it is considered one of the longest gondola lifts in the world and will pass through Lake Ribničko (Ribničko jezero), where there will also be an intermediate station. The gondola journey between Zlatibor and Mount Tornik will take 25 minutes.
Charming Market in Zlatibor: Pijaca Zlatibor
Filled with wooden chalets selling fresh fruits and vegetables as well as typical local artisanal foods (spreads, wines, honey, etc.). The market also offers clothing and souvenirs.
Stopića Cave Stopića Cave
A large and stunning cave (considered the second largest in Europe) featuring an underground river and a waterfall at its end. Inside the cave is an easy walking trail lasting about an hour. Located approximately a 30-minute drive (20 km) west of Zlatibor.
Sirogojno Ethnic Village Museum Etno Vilage Sirogojno
A delightful open-air museum showcasing many traditional structures from various historical periods, featuring the region's hallmark architectural style combining timber and stone. Some buildings host live crafts demonstrations. The village features an excellent authentic restaurant highly recommended for lunch. Located about a 35-minute drive (25 km) west of Zlatibor (near the stalactite cave).
Gostilje Waterfalls Gostilje waterfalls
A series of waterfalls reaching heights of 20 meters (counted among the tallest in Serbia), alongside which steps lead downward. Particularly impressive after rainy days. Located approximately 27 km southeast of Zlatibor.
Zipline Zlatibor Ljubiš ZipLine Zlatibor Ljubis
A fantastic and recommended zipline located about a 30-minute drive (25 km) southeast of Zlatibor (about 10 km south of Gostilje Waterfalls). Spanning 550 meters, it is considered the longest in Serbia. Suspended 130 meters above the ground, the thrilling glide across the beautiful scenery of village and forest lasts around one minute.

The Uvac River
An incredible nature day trip to the Uvac River, meandering dramatically through a deep gorge.
A combination of an off-road jeep excursion (the famous and impressive panoramic lookout can be reached either via a strenuous uphill trek or by jeep paired with an easy walk) and a boat cruise along the meandering river up to the caves (currently entry is only permitted up to the cave entrance, not inside).

Above the river, you will spot flocks of birds, primarily the rare Griffon Vulture nesting in the cliffs. The tour includes lunch at a restaurant called Restoran Borovi in the Muslim-heritage town of Sjenica near the river, famed for serving what is considered the best meat kebabs in Serbia.

Day Trip to Tara National Park Tara National park and the Drina River
The premier route includes the most picturesque and photographed viewpoint in all of Serbia: Banjska Rock Lookout,
several additional forest trails by a lake and a waterfall in the park, and a view of the famous house situated in the middle of the Drina River: House on the rock (the river demarcating the border between Serbia and Bosnia). The house has become an iconic symbol of Western Serbia and one of the most photographed sights in the country.
Driving time each way is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes (about 60 km). The tour includes lunch at a fine park restaurant named TARSKO JEZERO, which overlooks the lake and dam.
This is a scenic, highly recommended nature excursion—the most popular in all of Serbia.
Action enthusiasts and hikers can extend this into a two-day excursion in the park and incorporate kayaking on the Drina River. An example of a great tour:

Day Trip to Mokra Gora MOKRA GORA
It is highly recommended to take a guided tour (via one of the operators recommended for the Uvac tour), both because this allows you to ride the train one-way (recommended on the return leg—with short scenic stops at each station) rather than a round-trip journey that takes too long, and because you will gain significant insight into the history, geography, and culture of the region.

A visit to the massive, impressive World War II memorial complex Kadinjača Memorial Complex, sculpted by one of Serbia's most renowned artists and inaugurated by Tito.
Visit to the Monastery
A visit to the picturesque, modern Rujno Monastery, perched above a pastoral reservoir created by the Vrutci dam, followed by a view of the dam itself. Driving time to the monastery from your apartment is about 50 minutes.
Visit to the "Timber Town" Drvengrad
A traditional village in the Mokra Gora area established by revered Serbian film director Emir Kusturica, who relocated authentic antique wooden cabins from across the region to create a resort featuring a hotel, restaurants, tennis courts, and a movie theater that hosts a popular film festival every winter. The village also includes a barn, dairy, and greenhouse. It is a fantastic spot to enjoy lunch (featuring locally produced cheeses) before or after the train ride, wander among the houses, admire the views, and learn about the Serbian personalities after whom streets and squares are named—from Nikola Tesla to tennis superstar Novak Djokovic.
Scenic Ride on the Šargan Eight Train
A one-way ride on the historic train traversing bends, loops, and tunnels: Šargan Eight. The train stops at several stations, mostly for photo opportunities, and at the second station for an easy circular walk to a waterfall and panoramic viewpoint over the valley.
Followed by a visit to the pastoral church nestled in nature adjacent to the final railway station: Sveti Jovan Church.
The drive from Mokra Gora back to Zlatibor takes approximately 45 minutes.

You can of course explore Mokra Gora on your own; however, that requires riding the train round-trip for about two and a half hours, which necessitates cutting out other sights.
