A Trip to the Douro Valley in Portugal
The Douro Valley is considered (and rightfully so!) to be one of the most beautiful and ancient wine regions in the world (even older than Bordeaux in France). Wine has been produced here for about 2,000 years! It is the birthplace of the famous Port wine, but another wonderful sweet wine is also produced here: Moscatel.
The valley is located about 130 km east of the city of Porto (less than a two-hour drive) in northern Portugal and is named after the river that flows through its entire length: the Douro River. The sources of the river are in Spain, and it reaches Porto where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Douro River meanders for about 160 km across the Douro Valley (from the easternmost estate in the valley to the westernmost). The first terraces in the valley were built by the Romans as early as the 3rd century CE.
The Douro hills are made of granite and schist rocks, which is why it is surprising that precisely in these harsh terrain conditions, they manage to grow fine grapes.
The unique landscape of the Douro is the result of hundreds of years during which the locals dug into the hard granite soil and built terraces on the slopes of the valley. Today, almost all of these terraces are filled with vineyards, creating a very unique appearance. About two-thirds of the vineyard area is planted on slopes with a gradient of over 30 percent.
The terrain and weather conditions in the region have made the Douro the only area where Port wine can be produced. This matter was even regulated by a law enacted in 1756, making the Douro Valley the first legally regulated and demarcated wine-producing region in the world. In 2001, the Douro Valley was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When to Visit?
You can visit the Douro Valley in all seasons, but without a doubt, the most recommended seasons are spring and autumn.
In the spring, temperatures are comfortable and the vines, which are just beginning to bud, fill the valley with a variety of green shades.
Autumn is the harvest season. Temperatures are comfortable and the terraces are painted in orange, yellow, brown, and red colors. During this period, some of the wine estates offer visitors the chance to watch and even participate in the grape harvest, and there are several places that even allow guests to join the grape-treading process in the wine press.

How to Get There and Where to Tour?
You can reach the valley up to the town of Pinhão, which is the central town in the region, in three main ways: by car, by train, and by cruise.
It is easy, convenient, and friendly to tour the valley by driving independently, but for those planning to taste many wines (this is the main activity in the valley), it is more convenient to take a guided tour without the need to drive, allowing you to drink and taste without limits. Of course, if you intend to tour the area for two to three days (highly recommended), the most convenient and cheapest way is by rental car and staying at one of the wine estates (detailed later) where you can enjoy good wine without needing to drive back to the hotel afterward.
Between Porto and Pinhão, there is a train with a journey time of about three hours. This is a scenic and successful journey, suitable for those who do not wish to rent a car and want to stay in the area for at least two days. The train departs from the central station in Porto and initially bypasses the valley via the plateau to its north. Afterward, it enters between the hills, penetrates the valley, and continues its journey along the riverbank. Within the valley itself, between the hotel, wineries, and various towns, you can travel by taxis, which are not expensive at all.
Another popular way to get to the Douro Valley is by river cruise. In the past, the river served as a means of transportation and especially as the main transport route for carrying wine to Porto in boats called: O Barco Rabelo. Today, you can join a scenic tourist cruise in these boats and ofRourke, of course, also in modern tourist boats.
You can cruise from Porto to the town of Pinhão. This is a long cruise and the scenery begins to repeat itself at a certain point. Therefore, it is preferable to settle for a two-hour cruise from the town of Peso da Régua to Pinhão, from where there is a shuttle service back to the car. This is the most impressive area of the valley. A shorter, highly characteristic, and fulfilling cruise is a one-hour cruise from Pinhão.
The town of Pinhao :
There are companies that offer one-day tours where you cruise in one direction by boat and travel back by train, allowing you to see the landscapes from different angles in one busy day.
Halfway between Porto and the Douro Valley lies the picturesque town of Amarante, where a local church stands by the river. It is nice to stop there for a coffee break and a local pastry. The patron saint of the town was Gonçalo, a local monk who took care of arranging marriages for all the single women in town. The local bakeries sell pastries whose main purpose, according to popular belief, is to help women give birth and promote marriage.
The roads in the Douro Valley certainly feature some of the most beautiful scenery in Portugal (except for the Azores and Madeira, which have roads with dramatic and breathtaking landscapes). Most of the roads are winding and quite narrow, but driving on them is comfortable and safe. The route passes through terraces, wineries, and pastoral villages.
Along the winding scenic roads in the valley beside the river, there are plenty of impressive viewpoint spots overlooking the river, bridges, terraces, and picturesque towns. The most impressive viewpoint of all (chosen by the BBC as one of the most beautiful landscape viewpoints in the world) is: Miradouro de Casal de Loivos (about a 15-minute drive north of Pinhão), overlooking one of the river bends with a picturesque bridge and, on both sides of the river across the hills, countless cultivated terraces.
Another popular viewpoint, serving as one of the trademarks of the region, is over "Peso da Régua", the most famous bridge point of the Douro Valley.

N222 between Pinhão and "Peso da Régua" was chosen in 2015 by a luxury travel magazine as the World’s Best Driving Road.
Another town worth visiting is Lamego, known mainly for its historic center, where the famous "Church of Tears" is located. This church was established by the first king of Portugal, ten years before his proclamation as king. With the proclamation, the place became one of the holy sites in Portugal. Athletic people are recommended to climb about 600 steps and enjoy the magnificent view from it.
Wine Estates with Wine Tasting and Restaurants
Across the valley, there are over 200 wine production estates, called Quintas. Many of the Quintas offer tours and tastings at the winery, where you can expand your knowledge about Port wine and its unique production process. Some of the Quintas feature excellent restaurants serving local food alongside the wines produced there. Many of the estates feature ancient buildings surrounded by well-tended and sprawling gardens. Many of them overlook wonderful landscapes. Some of the Quintas feature special hotels with character and atmosphere. There are large and modern Quintas, and some are small and family-run, where they still tread the grapes the traditional way, with their feet!

The wine estate is located in the town of Favaios and offers Port wine tastings alongside Moscatel wines.
The winery preserves local tradition alongside the development of advanced technological means, and a guided tour is held there that includes, of course, tastings and a visit to a small wine museum.
The winery has charming gardens and a restaurant serving gourmet meals with a variety of characteristic and very tasty local dishes served while sharing stories about the valley, its residents, and local folklore.
Quinta da Pacheca
In this ancient family winery, spreading over an area of about 200 dunams of breathtaking scenery, grapes are still trodden by foot—a process they claim enhances the flavor.
Here too, a guided tour including tastings is held, and during the harvest season, guests can (by prior arrangement) participate in traditional grape treading.
In the sprawling estate abundant with vegetation and atmosphere, there is a successful hotel featuring, in addition to rooms in the regular building, unique and modern guest rooms built from giant wooden barrels that were previously used for storing wine. These rooms are very popular and must be booked well in advance.

A high-quality and popular wine estate belonging to the Croft winery family. Besides fine wine tastings, visitors can also enjoy high-quality olive oil.

The Douro Valley features a large selection of walking and biking trails of all lengths and levels. Some of the trails pass through the vineyards. Especially recommended for those who have time and some fitness: a successful 17.5 km trail with an easy-to-moderate difficulty level starting in the town of Favaios and ending in the town of Pinhão. Along its entire length are breathtaking landscape viewpoints. You can hike the trails independently or take a guided walking tour that also includes explanations, demonstrations, and tastings along the way.
