♦ Trip from Coffs Harbour to Port Macquarie
Driving time is approximately two hours (152 km).
Port Macquarie
Port Macquarie is the largest resort town between Coffs Harbour and Sydney. The town features a small koala hospital where you can take a guided tour or a self-guided walk. Throughout the hospital and the entire town, there are many koala sculptures beautifully painted and decorated in various unique styles.
The town boasts a charming promenade called the Breakwall, located on a breakwater built specifically for protection against ocean flooding. What makes this boardwalk special are the painted stones that form the breakwater. Local residents have painted, written, and decorated the rocks, each according to their own imagination.
Adjacent to the breakwater is a large caravan park. On the other side of the boardwalk, the path leads to a beautiful beach.
Afterward, it is recommended to drive along the coast and stop at scenic viewpoints overlooking various beaches.
One of the best viewpoints is at Tacking Point Lighthouse, where a lovely lighthouse sits atop a hill overlooking the ocean. You can walk down to the beach via a trail with many stairs.
♦ Trip from Port Macquarie to Newcastle
From Port Macquarie, continue south for about three hours toward the city of Newcastle, which is the second-largest city in New South Wales after Sydney. It is recommended to stay overnight in the surrounding area.

Fishing Point
For those who prefer staying in a small town rather than a large city, it is recommended to stay in Fishing Point, located on a vast 110 sq km lake named Lake Macquarie. This is a saltwater lake with a narrow outlet leading to the ocean.
A small and highly recommended Bed & Breakfast: Overnight Reflections B&B. One of its rooms previously served as a boathouse from which boats were launched directly into the lake. It has been converted into a room featuring a bathroom, kitchenette, jacuzzi, and a terrace right on the water with views of the lake—charming!
In the nearby town of Toronto, also situated on the same lake, a great place to stay is the apartment hotel: The Brighton Apartments – Offers studio apartments for couples, 1-bedroom apartments with a living room, 2-bedroom options, and a penthouse. Includes free Wi-Fi and free parking.
Day Trips from Fishing Point
Exploring the region by car: Drive along the lake through the town of Toronto to Blacksmiths Beach, a family-friendly beach complete with lifeguards. You can refresh yourself and swim in the water here.
Continue to Swansea, a larger town in the area situated at the mouth of the lake, where you can pause for a meal at one of the restaurants.
From there, head to Caves Beach, where at low tide you can walk inside and explore the sea caves along the waterfront.
Near the caves are small tidal rock pools perfect for wading. Next to the caves is a developed beach with lifeguard service.
Newcastle
Touring Charlestown and Newcastle: The town of Charlestown is essentially a suburb of Newcastle.
For those interested in a shopping break, Charlestown features the largest shopping center in the area, as well as a Max Brenner for chocolate lovers.
A driving distance of roughly 15 minutes from Charlestown will bring you into Newcastle, a city of around 300,000 residents.
There is a historical fortress named Fort Scratchley located right by the harbor entrance, which is open for tours. From the fort, continue about a kilometer to Nobbys Head, a peninsula featuring a popular beach. The site includes a lighthouse that can only be visited on Saturdays. Walking along the pier to the lighthouse is a great experience even when the lighthouse itself is closed.
Continue by car to the Ocean Baths—oceanwater pools situated right next to the open sea where you can go for a swim.
From there, stroll along the coast for views of the shoreline and the city. The finest vantage point is from the Memorial Walk, a elevated bridge promenade high above the beach built in honor of WWI soldiers, complete with sculptures and the names of the fallen. One side overlooks the ocean, while the other offers views of the city skyline and harbor.
The city is spread out without a dense skyscraper center, but it holds one of Australia's largest commercial ports. While historically an industrial city, it features several beautiful beaches.
If you are looking for a place to eat, drive over to Darby Street, which is famous for its international dining options.

The drive from Newcastle to Sydney takes about two and a quarter hours, mostly along the motorway.
