St. John Island

St. John is the smallest of the US Virgin Islands and is located just a half-hour boat ride from St. Thomas.

This island was purchased by the USA from the Danish government during World War I, in 1917, with the aim of establishing a naval base there. Two-thirds of the island is designated as a National Park.

The island is known for its excellent beaches with clear, calm waters. The island's economy is primarily based on tourism.

Transportation

There is no airport on this island; it can be reached by regular ferry service from the neighboring island of St. Thomas, which has an airport.

In the past, the main port on the island was Coral Bay, but today the main port is Cruz Bay, where ferries arrive regularly from St. Thomas, as well as vehicles and goods arriving on barges.

 

Tours, Beaches, and Entertainment on the Island

Most of the shops and restaurants on the island are concentrated in Cruz Bay. Those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle will find what they seek in the Coral Bay area, where there are few restaurants and shops and fewer tourists.

The island is an excellent destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The water is clear, visibility is good, and there are many snorkeling spots.
