About 90 minutes drive from Los Angeles, near the city of San Bernardino, is a high mountain range, completely snowy in the winter months. The road to it from San Bernardino, via road SR18, is breathtakingly beautiful and is called: 'Rim of the World Drive'. The road is about 64 km long and is at an altitude of 1500-2200 meters above sea level. The road is dotted with observation points with a lovely view of cliffs, the valley, and lakes. Two large lakes are located at the mountain peaks: Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead. A resort town sits on the shore of each lake. Big Bear Lake is the larger of the two.
The area is a resort site year-round. In the winter months it is a ski resort for skiers from all over Southern California, while in the summer months many flock to vacation on the shores of the picturesque lakes. In winter, parts of the lake freeze, and the sight of snowy mountains with a semi-frozen lake, small houses with snow-covered roofs and icicles, is reminiscent of Swiss scenery. In winter, even those who are not professional skiers can enjoy many snow activities: tubing, sledding, etc.
The towns have many hotels. Some are wooden cabins on the lake shore. In winter it is a special experience to stay in a cabin covered in snow, on the shore of a frozen lake, watching the falling snow and pampering yourself in a private hot tub (many cabins have rooms with a large hot tub). Accommodation prices are quite expensive on weekends, but mid-week you can stay in a good hotel for a lower price.
