A trip to Lake Powell (on the Arizona-Utah border) and its surroundings is one of the highlights of a trip to the Western US. The starting point for trips in this area is the town of Page located in northern Arizona, so it is recommended to stay there and book hotels well in advance as demand is high and those who book early get a better hotel at a cheaper price.

Glen Canyon Dam

The town of Page in Arizona lies on the banks of the Colorado River, near the Glen Canyon Dam, which is one of the most impressive dams in the US. Don't miss a visit to the dam! The dam's visitor center is open daily from 8:00-17:00 and in the summer months from 7:00-18:00. Phone: 520-645-0401. Entrance and the tour are free!

Glen Canyon Dam

This dam created one of the most beautiful artificial lakes - Lake Powell. Its blue waters create a striking contrast with the reddish color of the mountains rising around it.

Sailing on Lake Powell

The water carved many bays and amazing shapes into the surrounding rocks, the most famous of which is a giant arch named: "Rainbow Bridge", considered the largest natural bridge in the world. Near the dam, there is a large marina from which ships depart for cruises of two hours or more on the lake. The most impressive tour, but also the longest (about half a day), is to the Rainbow Bridge National Monument. On the eastern side of the lake, you can also rent a fast motorboat and sail between the bays of the lake. A fun experience for all ages in magnificent scenery but not recommended for those prone to seasickness. In the summer, it is recommended to book a boat in advance! At Lake Powell, you can also rent a houseboat and live on it for several days. This pleasure is quite expensive but very popular among Americans. An enjoyable and recommended experience is going on a guided kayak tour on the lake.

A recommended family experience is a several-hour raft trip on the Colorado River, where the part near the Glen Canyon Dam features quiet and peaceful waters and the scenery during the cruise is breathtakingly beautiful. The cruise is held between the months of May to September.

Indian Tribes

Page is also the place to get a close look at the Navajo Indians (the largest Indian tribe in the US) and their customs. The Navajo Village Heritage Center is located in the city, where every evening from April to October a tour of about two and a half hours is held, which includes many explanations about the Indian lifestyle, accompanied by demonstrations, dances, songs and stories, and also includes a traditional dinner.

Horseshoe Bend

A wonderful viewpoint within a short drive from Page is "Horseshoe Bend", located about 6 km south of Page near Highway 89. A walk of about 1.2 km will lead you to a stunning (free!) viewpoint of a section of the Colorado River making a nearly 360-degree bend between impressive reddish-brown cliffs. A tip for photography enthusiasts: the best time to arrive at the place is between 12:00 PM and 14:00.

Antelope Canyon

Page also serves as an excellent starting point for visiting the impressive Antelope Canyon, located just a few kilometers southeast of Page, in a Navajo Indian reservation. The canyon, commonly known as the "Screw Canyon" (because of its twisted shape), is particularly loved by photography enthusiasts. It is not possible to tour the site independently, but only through guided tours.

Antelope Canyon

Guided tours in Antelope Canyon:

Several companies organize tours in the canyon. There are several types of tours. Some include a jeep ride, walking in the narrow and winding part of the canyon, and explanations about the geology and history of the place, as well as the culture and customs of the Indians on the reservation. It is recommended to book places in advance!
