Accommodations and Food in National Parks in the USA and Canada

♦ Routes (free): Detailed travel itineraries in USA

National Parks in the USA are essentially vast nature reserves; some span thousands of square kilometers while others are more compact. The total area of the National Parks (about 35 in number across the USA) is over 100 million dunams, which is about one percent of the entire area of the USA! National Parks are extremely diverse in their form and the natural phenomena within them: ranging from glaciers, massive forests, swamps, deep canyons, beaches, rivers and waterfalls, springs and geysers, enormous mountains, and sculptures created by nature. These parks are a true paradise for all lovers of nature, open spaces, and travel.

One of the important questions in planning a trip to National Parks is where to stay and eat. I will try to answer generally: Within the parks themselves, there are many camping sites and most also have hotels. The level of hotels ranges from unique and expensive luxury hotels to wooden cabins without en-suite facilities. Due to the massive demand for staying in these hotels, it is necessary to book accommodation months in advance during the season, especially if you are planning a trip during summer vacation. As early as April, there were no vacancies for August in a hotel we were interested in at Yellowstone National Park! The price range of hotels in the parks is quite wide, depending on their location and level, but fundamentally the prices are not cheap. For the price of a Spartan room inside the park that has no air conditioning, television, or telephone, you can stay in a pampered room that has everything in a good motel at the entrance to the park. Furthermore, outside the park, restaurants are cheaper and in a larger variety. Therefore, if you are not a die-hard nature lover who wants to wake up and see the sunrise over the canyon, I recommend touring the parks during the day and sleeping outside them at night.

There are several restaurants in the parks (mainly near hotels and visitor centers) and some also have small grocery stores for selling food products. It is recommended that you stock up on snacks and drinks before entering the park, which you can consume during the day while touring at leisure or during the drive. Eat a light lunch inside the park, and keep the main meal for the evening outside the park. On the park map that you receive at the park entrance or at visitor centers, all services and restaurants available in the park are detailed.
