A Trip to Bryce Canyon: Southern Utah

♦ Routes (free): Detailed travel itineraries in USA

General

Bryce Canyon is one of the most beautiful and impressive parks in the USA. Its area is relatively small compared to other national parks: about 144 thousand dunams, and thanks to its relatively compact size, it is possible to see it and visit all its major points of interest in one day. In the park, you can find the most colorful rocks on earth in unique shapes shaped by nature due to the phenomenon of erosion: thousands of columns, cones, spires, and mazes made of colorful sandstone and limestone. A road about 54 km long winds along the canyon rim, offering a stunning view of the sculpted rocks. The canyon is located in a forested area rich in vegetation, which adds to its beauty.

Bryce

Every year, about 1.75 million visitors come to the park.
The entrance fee to the park is $35 per car (updated price). With this price, you can enter the park for an entire week.

Park Location:

Bryce Canyon is located in southern Utah, about 140 km northeast of Zion National Park. You reach the park from U.S. 89, turn east on Route 12, and from there south (right) on Route 63.
The park is located 430 km northeast of Las Vegas and at the same distance of 430 km south of Salt Lake City. Near the park is a small airport that receives flights mainly from Las Vegas.

 Recommended Accommodations

I recommend staying outside the canyon, right next to the park entrance, at one of the two Best Western motels, both at a 3-star level:

♦  Best Western PLUS Ruby's Inn - The veteran inn that spans a wide area and has spacious and pleasant rooms. The hotel has several restaurants (not expensive), an indoor heated pool, a large store, laundry, and all required services. During the summer months, rodeo shows are held on the hotel grounds, and most of the year, guided horseback riding tours depart from it near the canyon rim. The horses are well-trained and obedient, and riding them will surely delight your children, while you will enjoy the view. You can also go on guided ATV tours or rent ATVs for an independent trip in the ancient landscape. It is advisable to book a place at this hotel as early as possible.

♦  Best Western PLUS Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel is a modern hotel of the same chain located right next to Ruby's Inn. This is the newest, most spacious, and high-quality hotel near Bryce Canyon. Several smaller and less attractive hotels are located on the main road further away from the park.

Weather:

Visitors can enjoy a visit to the park during all seasons: summer days are pleasant and nights are cool because the park is located at an altitude of about 2,500 meters. July is the hottest month, with an average maximum temperature of 28°C and an average minimum temperature at night of 8°C. Most of the rain falls in the afternoon from mid to late summer. Fluctuations in weather during autumn and spring can be extreme. In winter, days are cold but generally clear and dry. In particularly cold winters, temperatures can drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius! The snowiest month is March, but snow may fall from October through April. The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day. During winter months, a temporary and short closure of roads is possible after a snowstorm.

Where to Visit in the Park:

The park visitor center is open all year except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Opening hours vary according to the seasons. In winter: 8:00-16:30, in spring and autumn: 8:00-18:00, and in summer: 8:00-20:00. At the center, they screen slides about the park; it has a small display of the flora, fauna, and topography of the area, and you can get all the necessary information, including maps and trails. It is worth stopping at the visitor center right at the beginning of your trip to the park.

The road for cars is called "Rim Drive" and is 52 km long. This road, which has many viewpoints and parking areas, is a dead end. From each viewpoint, you see the craters and sculpted rocks from a different angle. It is recommended to drive to its end, stop at the last point called "Rainbow Point," and from there return and stop at the viewpoints along the way. The maximum permitted driving speed is 25-35 miles per hour (40-56 km/h) and it is strictly enforced. In summer, the parking lots at most attractive points are extremely crowded and you will find it difficult to find parking. The best hours to visit the attractive points are before 10:00 AM or after 5:00 PM. Due to the lack of parking and traffic congestion in the park, a shuttle system throughout the park is planned to open soon to ease movement. The most recommended season to visit the park is spring, when the rock peaks are covered with snow, adding glory and charm to the many other colors of the cliffs. Besides that, the density of visitors is not high and you will not encounter parking problems. In the park, there are many hiking trails (totaling over 80 km) for all levels of difficulty. The shortest trail is 800 meters (one way) and is a section of the rim trail located between "Sunrise Point" and "Sunset Point."

Some of the hiking trails descend into the canyon and pass between the spire-sculpted rocks:
"Fairyland Loop," about 13 km long; "Peekaboo Loop," about 8 km long (it also serves as a route for horseback riding tours); "Queen’s Gardens," about 2.8 km long; and "Navajo Loop," which is about 2.4 km long.

Bryce

For families, it is recommended to hike the "Navajo Loop," which is indeed the shortest route but passes through unique and diverse rock formations in a variety of colors, including arches and small caves. This is a magnificent route that you should definitely not miss! The trail starts at "Sunset Point."

The most recommended viewpoints are: "Sunrise," "Sunset," "Inspiration," "Bryce," and "Rainbow."

The Rangers organize activities, guided tours, and a junior ranger program for children from late spring through early autumn. Check the visitor center or the hotel in the park for the daily program. It is recommended to join one of their orientations.
