Travel in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

♦ Routes (free): Detailed travel itineraries in USA

Shenandoah National Park is located on the Blue Ridge Mountains in the state of Virginia, which reach an altitude of about 1200 meters. Along the entire mountain range in the park, there is a road called: Skyline Drive, which is about 170 km long, with impressive views of mountains and valleys on both sides. Along the road, there are many stopping points for viewing a spectacular panoramic landscape from both sides of the mountain range.

Additionally, along the mountain range, there is also a section of a long (about 160 km within this park) and winding hiking trail called the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which is the longest hiking trail in the world, stretching 2,193 miles and crossing 14 states in the United States from Maine in the north to Georgia in the south. On the Skyline Drive, there are also many stopping points with parking from which many hiking trails into the forests depart, some of which are integrated with the Appalachian Trail. On these trails, you can observe the park's flora and fauna, waterfalls, mountain views, rocks, and valleys. Deer can often be seen in the forests. Various birds of prey can be seen above the forests. Black bears also live in these forests, but they are rarer to spot.

Besides hiking trails, you can also go horseback riding and cycling in the park. However, since there is no dedicated bicycle path and cyclists ride on the main road which lacks shoulders, it does not seem safe enough to ride bicycles here.

A trip to Shenandoah Park integrates into a travel route between Washington D.C. south along the Blue Ridge Mountains range to the Smoky Mountains, to destinations such as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Asheville, and further destinations such as Nashville in Tennessee and/or Atlanta in Georgia.

Hiking Trails in Shenandoah Park

The park has many hiking trails in the surrounding forests with various difficulty levels and lengths. Their total length reaches about 800 km. Recommended short and easy hiking trails are:

Blackrock Summit Trail

A loop trail in the forest about 1.6 km long that reaches a large hill of massive rocks with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Along the way, you can sometimes observe deer grazing in the forest. The trail is located between the southern entrance to the park and the entrance from Route 33.

Big Meadows

Near the Harry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center, there is a large meadow where various plants, shrubs, and flowers grow. It is recommended to hike there early in the morning or toward sunset because many deer graze in these fields at those times.

Those with limited time can certainly explore just a portion of the park to appreciate its beauty, complete one or two hiking trails, and combine it with a visit to Luray Caverns, which are the largest and most beautiful in the area.

Weather in the Park

The weather in the park is warm in the summer and cold in the winter, with no dry season, seeing 80 to 130 mm of rain per month. During the summer months, there are an average of about 11 rainy days each month.

In the summer months, the average daytime temperature is 24 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees at night. In winter, it averages 4 degrees during the day and minus 7 degrees Celsius at night. Snow is possible in winter, but it does not accumulate and melts quite quickly.

The most suitable months to travel in the park are between May and September.

During your trip to the area, check the forecast and plan your park visit for days when the forecast is good for mountain hiking. On rainy days, visit indoor locations such as the local stalactite caves, shopping centers, and museums.
