A Trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
♦ Routes (free): Detailed travel itineraries in USA
Hilton Head Island is a luxury resort island located along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in southern South Carolina. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so no ferry is needed to reach it. The island is known for its excellent sandy ocean beaches, which are about 20 km long. On the other side of the island, and also within it, are bays and canals with vegetation in a nature teeming with wildlife: a vast variety of birds, fish, dolphins, turtles, crabs, and even alligators—all within an abundance of sub-tropical vegetation that, of course, includes plenty of mangroves.
The island features prestigious neighborhoods with beautiful villas along the coastline and inland, offering a wide range of accommodation options for tourists—from luxurious oceanfront resorts to villas and vacation rentals, alongside apartment hotels, motels, and boutique hotels.
The island, which is 20 km long and about 8.5 km wide, is home to approximately 40,000 permanent residents, but it attracts about 2.5 million tourists annually.
Common recreational activities on the island include vacationing on the lovely beaches, bicycle tours on the island and the beaches themselves, boating and kayaking in diverse nature, fishing, dolphin-watching cruises, parasailing, jet skiing, tennis, golf, and plenty of shopping.
The island has 85 kilometers of nature trails, over 100 kilometers of bicycle paths, 300 tennis courts (the island has more courts per capita than anywhere else in the US), 24 golf courses, and more than 250 restaurants of all styles. Of course, the island is known for its seafood restaurants and American restaurants with southern influence, but it also offers a selection of Asian, Mexican, Caribbean, French, Greek, and naturally, Italian restaurants.
Despite being a highly developed tourist destination, it was built in harmony with nature; therefore, there are no flashing neon lights on the island, all signs are in natural colors, and the structures blend with the environment.
The weather in Hilton Head is comfortable most of the year.

The entire beach located on the southeastern side of the island (about 20 km long) bordering the Atlantic Ocean is a wide sandy beach where you can easily ride a bicycle near the water, while the part further from the water has soft sand pleasant for sitting and lying on.
All beaches in Hilton Head are public, but access to most of them is private through homes, villas, and hotels along the shore. Beaches with public access are available every few kilometers. They are marked and usually have nearby parking (typically paid), public restrooms, showers, and more.

Coligny Beach Park
This is the most popular and central beach on the island. It is located at the end of the main access street to the island, Pope Ave. Adjacent to the beach is a park with outdoor showers, changing rooms and restrooms, swings, and chair and umbrella rentals. Bicycle Tours
The best way to explore Hilton Head Island is to rent a bicycle and spend an entire day touring between long beaches,
beautiful marinas, charming villas, well-kept neighborhoods, small lakes, and mangroves.
Stop for a good meal at a restaurant overlooking the sea, have an ice cream at the marina, and observe birds—you might even see an alligator on the way.

The entire island has convenient and organized bicycle paths. Additionally, it is easy, convenient, and very enjoyable to ride for many kilometers on the long beach with the beautiful sea right beside you, various bird species flying overhead, and a pleasant breeze on your face. There are many rental companies in every corner of the island. Rental cost: about $15 per person per day.
Walking Tours
In addition to walking along the long beaches, Hilton Head Island has many nature walking trails in the heart of the town. Especially recommended:
Walking on elevated platforms through rich vegetation in the park: Sea Pines Forest Preserve
Other recommended trails that are free to tour include:
Jarvis Creek Fitness Trail: Along the trail are 10 diverse fitness stations in a landscape of a lake, river, extensive vegetation, and plenty of wildlife to encounter.
Audubon Newhall Preserve: An easy 3.4 km hiking trail around a small lake amidst lush vegetation and wildlife.
Shopping and Entertainment on Hilton Head Island
The island features several small, well-kept shopping centers. Across the bridge, in the Bluffton area, about a 10-minute drive from the center of the island, there are also two Tanger Outlets and large department stores such as Walmart and Target alongside discounted outlet stores. Various events are held in the shopping centers at many times throughout the year, and they are, of course, decorated and lit with thousands of lights and decorations from late November to early January for Christmas and the New Year.
Harbour Town
An open-air shopping and entertainment center located within a prestigious neighborhood on the island, Sea Pines Resort. It is a stylish center with a marina, a photogenic lighthouse, restaurants, and shops. A place to stroll and soak in the atmosphere and beautiful views, eat at a high-quality restaurant, or just have coffee. Entry to the neighborhood (for those not residing there) requires a fee. The lighthouse was never active; it was built as a shop and tourist attraction and became one of the island's symbols.

Beside small boutiques, it features recommended department stores such as T.J. Maxx and Belk, a good supermarket, and plenty of walking and biking trails.
And adjacent to it:

A large and photogenic marina which also features a variety of shops and restaurants. This is also the place to rent a boat or join a dolphin-watching cruise and explore the nature rich in birds and various marine animals, both in the open sea and in the canals and river rich in vegetation.
Dolphins can often be observed up close from the marina promenade even without needing to sail. During the summer months, a spectacular fireworks display is held there every Tuesday evening.
Tanger Outlets Hilton Head
A factory outlet center with over 90 brand-name stores, divided into two adjacent centers (after expanding and developing). Popular chains include H&M, Adidas, New Balance, Skechers, Tommy Hilfiger, North Face, Levi’s, Nike, and many more. Located across the bridge connecting the island to the mainland.
Guided Tours and Active Recreation:
Boating is one of the most popular activities on the island. It is a wonderful way to see various marine life, characteristic vegetation, stunning sunsets, all in calm waters in the waterways between the mainland and the island.
Many companies offer various boating tours in boats of different types and sizes. From dolphin-watching boat trips:

Savannah, Georgia
It is very worthwhile to head out from Hilton Head for a full-day trip to the nearby beautiful city of Savannah. Only a 40-minute drive.
Savannah, founded in 1733, is one of the oldest cities in the US and the oldest city in Georgia. It is a city with typical southern charm and atmosphere, full of museums and historical structures. The city sees millions of tourists visiting annually. Downtown Savannah is a central and lovely destination for any group, especially the promenade on River Street along the river and its market.

Charleston, South Carolina
The city of Charleston in South Carolina is located on the coast, about a two-hour drive north of Hilton Head. The city is known for its southern atmosphere and hospitality and its elegant charm. The streets of the old city are paved with bricks on which horse-drawn carriages travel between preserved historical buildings full of majesty. Some of the most impressive and best-preserved mansion houses in the entire US are located in the city or nearby. Details about the city in my article: "A Trip to Charleston".
