A Trip to Rotorua
General Information
Rotorua is located in the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand. The city is situated on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, after which it is named, about 230 km southeast of Auckland. Approximately 55,000 residents live in the city itself, and about 70,000 in the Rotorua District. Over 3 million tourists visit it annually. 72 percent of the area's residents are of European descent, 36 percent are Maori, and the rest arrived from Asia or Pacific islands.
Thanks to its many Maori residents, it is considered the "Heart of Maori Culture."
Rotorua is also considered the thermal wonder capital of the world, featuring seven geothermal sites that include hot springs, bubbling mud pools, geysers, and more. Even in the city center you can find hot pools, and if you dig near one of the city's lakes (sometimes just one meter from the lake!), whose waters are quite cold, you will quickly reach (about 30 cm deep) scorching earth and boiling water.
The district contains 18 lakes, 3 rivers, 8,000 dunams of gardens, and 41 percent of the district's area is forested, including giant redwood trees. The area has several volcanoes and hundreds of kilometers of cycling and hiking trails.
In addition to all this, Rotorua is packed with action and extreme adrenaline-pumping sports and surprises.
It is a wonderful destination for a diverse family vacation, and it is recommended to dedicate at least 3-4 days to experience the best of it.

The Maori Residents
Rotorua is the premier place to experience and learn about Maori culture. A great way to do this is by visiting the "Maori Experience" at Tamaki Village. The experience includes transportation to the Maori village from the city center and various local hotels. During the bus ride, the Maori driver will teach you several Maori words and traditions. The Maori are renowned for their sense of humor, making the ride a delightful and entertaining experience. Along the way, the driver selects the group's "Chief."
After about a 20-minute drive, you arrive at the Maori village entrance, where a multi-stage ceremony takes place. It features a war dance and intimidation displays by Maori "warriors," including eye-widening and tongue-protruding gestures. At the end of the ceremony, the Chiefs accept the Maori peace offering, and after hongi (the traditional Maori greeting of pressing noses), visitors enter the village, which is filled with authentic huts and carvings. In each hut, several Maori in traditional dress demonstrate and explain various customs, crafts, dances, and more. From there, you proceed to the performance hall, where a troupe of about 10 dancers and singers performs traditional dances and songs using props such as poi balls, sticks, and weapons. It is an engaging and enjoyable performance of just the right length (about half an hour) that includes informative explanations. Afterwards, guests move to a large dining hall for a generous and delicious traditional "Hangi" meal featuring typical Maori dishes: lamb, chicken, kumara (sweet potato), potatoes, and carrots, all cooked in an underground earthen oven. In addition, fresh salads and delicious desserts are served, including New Zealand's most famous dessert—Pavlova, a meringue cake topped with fruit and whipped cream. Following the meal, a brief farewell ceremony is held. The entire experience, including round-trip transport, lasts about 3.5 hours.

Thermal Parks
The most famous and impressive thermal park in the Rotorua area is located about a 40-minute drive south of the city: Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland.

You should arrive at the site before 10:00 AM, as every day at 10:15 AM the park's most famous geyser erupts. Afterwards, take a walk along the organized trail (it is recommended to choose the long track) among bubbling mud pools, yellow-orange sulfur pools, hot springs, brightly colored green and turquoise pools, and lots of steam. It is an impressive trail where no section should be missed. The walk takes about two and a half to three hours. The site has a rather pungent sulfur smell resembling rotten eggs, but you get used to it quite quickly.
A combination of the two hallmark attractions of Rotorua—geothermal phenomena and Maori culture—can be found at Te Puia Maori Thermal Park. It combines impressive thermal sights with Maori culture and performances. The park visit includes a guided tour with explanations about the geothermal wonders, Maori history, way of life, and beliefs; an interactive display on natural phenomena and Maori heritage; and a visit to the Kiwi House, home to two kiwi birds—the iconic nocturnal bird after which New Zealanders are named (the kiwi house is kept dark during the day to encourage nighttime activity levels), a Maori performance, and sweet corn cooked directly in the natural hot spring waters.
The park features highly active geysers that erupt hourly up to heights of about 10 meters, as well as steaming hot pools and sulfur springs.
The Maori show features songs, dances, a brief chief selection ceremony, and a peace welcoming ritual.
Right in the heart of the city center, there is an expansive urban park featuring bubbling mud pools, steam rising from every vent, hot springs (including several pools where you can bathe and soak), alongside a swan lake and manicured gardens.
Nearby on the lakefront stands a famous historic church. What makes this church unique is its blend of Maori cultural motifs with Christian traditions, surrounded by traditional Maori carvings and buildings. Etched onto one of the church windows is an image of Jesus, positioned so that looking out from inside gives the impression that Jesus is walking on the water of the lake.

Cable Car to the Mountain Near Rotorua
Take the Skyline Gondola up Rotorua's mountain with Skyline Skyrides, offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Similar to Queenstown on the South Island, there is a Luge track here where you ride downhill carts along three distinct trails varying in speed and difficulty.
Visiting the Agrodome
A venue filled with attractions and activities, the most famous being the 1-hour show held 3 times a day centered around sheep farming. Here you will learn everything about sheep, their behavior, wool types, and more. You will also watch live sheep shearing, a sheep auction, cow milking, and sheep herding by working dogs—all with audience participation and plenty of humor. Rolling Down the Hill with OGO
A short drive from the city center brings you to one of the most exciting attractions in the area: OGO—giant, transparent, water-filled inflatable spheres that roll downhill! It is an exhilarating adventure recommended for all thrill-seekers.
In winter, the water inside is warm and soothing; in summer, cool and refreshing, followed immediately by relaxing in the huge outdoor hot tub on site. If you prefer to stay dry, there is also an option to ride inside a dry sphere. You can roll solo, in pairs, or in groups of three. A quick ride, but an absolute blast for adrenaline lovers.
This is the official site founded by the inventors of the attraction. Truly a cool Kiwi invention, high in adrenaline and suitable for the entire family (children aged 6 and up).

Velocity Valley Adventure Park
This nearby adventure park is packed with rides and extreme thrills, including: an agrojet sprint boat hitting speeds of 100 km/h, bungy jumping, a freefall wind tunnel, the Swoop—where three people are strapped together in a harness, hoisted high by a crane, and dropped into a massive swing between sky and earth—and many more attractions. Each ride is paid for individually. A unique attraction here is the Shweeb, where you pedal aerodynamically enclosed capsules suspended on an overhead monorail track 5 meters above the ground.
Rainbow Springs Nature Reserve
North of Rotorua lies Rainbow Springs Nature Reserve, situated just 4 km north of central Rotorua.
The reserve features several freshwater pools (including an underwater viewing area) and an aviary home to rare native New Zealand birds.
A highlight is joining the Kiwi Encounter tour. This is a 30-minute guided tour departing hourly on the hour between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The tour offers a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of these nocturnal birds, including egg incubation and chick hatching. The guide explains how kiwis live in the wild, why protecting chicks in the sanctuary is vital, and how they are released back into nature once grown.
In addition, the park offers two great family-friendly attractions: a daily bird show at 11:30 AM showcasing the park's exotic and native bird species.
Another popular attraction on site is the Big Splash water ride, a boat chute journey exploring New Zealand's ecological history and wildlife, concluding with a splash plunge suitable for the whole family and children aged 5 and older.

Rainbow Mountain Reserve
For nature and landscape lovers, a half-day excursion to the Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve is highly recommended. It features two scenic walking tracks: one 2.5 km trail climbing to the mountain summit for an impressive 360-degree view over the surrounding landscape, including volcanic peaks and lush forests (taking about 2.5 to 3 hours return); and an easier 1 km track (about 15 minutes each way) leading to viewpoints overlooking two turquoise crater lakes. The reserve is located about 26 km southwest of Rotorua.
Lake Taupo
Rotorua also serves as an excellent starting point for a day trip to Lake Taupo. Bay of Plenty
Another fantastic day trip heading northward is to the Bay of Plenty. The most famous attraction in the area is in Te Puke at KIWI360, dedicated to kiwifruit cultivation. Visitors can take a 30-minute guided tour in an orchard tram to learn how kiwifruit is grown, explore different varieties, and see how harvesting works.

The Town of Mt. Maunganui
From there, continue to Mt. Maunganui, a popular coastal resort town featuring a prominent mountain peak right by the ocean. The town boasts superb beaches for swimming and surfing. It is well worth walking the scenic loop track around the base or hiking up to the summit—the hike takes about an hour each way, with the final stretch being quite steep.
A short drive away is a unique adventure attraction: land sailing with wind-powered Blokart karts at Blokart Heaven.
