There is no need to rent a car in Cancun. There is regular public transportation and many taxis with a fixed and very reasonable rate.
Take into account that meals in restaurants are quite expensive in Cancun, which is a distinct tourist city to which Americans flock in droves, but the light Mexican music in the background creates a perfect vacation atmosphere.
Playa del Carmen
You can split the vacation in Cancun and combine it with a few days in the city of Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya, located about an hour's drive south of Cancun. It is a very touristy city with many hotels covering all its beaches, and its coastline is crowded with bathers.
