Vestmannaeyjar Islands

Vestmannaeyjar - The Westman Islands are located off the southwestern coast of Iceland and comprise 14 islands, including Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the group, and Surtsey. The story of the latter is fascinating – the island rose above sea level in the late 1960s as a result of a volcanic eruption from an underwater volcano. Today, the island serves mainly for research by geologists studying the development and formation of islands.

♦ Booking tours in the Westman Islands from Viator:

A visit to the island is recommended for enthusiasts of geology and natural phenomena, as it is a very fascinating archipelago. Those wishing to visit can reach it in two ways: the cheaper way is by taking the Herjolfur ferry, which departs daily from Þorlákshöfn, located 30 km from Selfoss. To get to Þorlákshöfn from Selfoss, continue south on Route 34. The ferry ride takes about three hours. There is a shorter, but more expensive option: Eagle Air operates daily flights from Reykjavik to the Westman Islands.
