Trip to the Laki Craters

The Laki craters are the result of a catastrophic volcanic eruption that occurred in 1783. The eruption caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and animals, causing extensive damage to property and agriculture in Iceland and worldwide. The volcanic ash cloud that covered the skies led to famine, severe cold, and darkness across many regions of the globe. Initially, European residents suffered the brunt of the eruption's consequences—especially in Scandinavia—though the ash cloud eventually reached Russia and China. In fact, one theory suggests that the French Revolution (1789) was triggered by famine resulting from the Laki eruption.

The 135 craters of Laki are situated along ten fissures stretching 2-5 km in length. Today, they attract numerous travelers marveling at nature's grandeur, though the devastating disaster that took place here should not be forgotten. The lava that poured from the fissures covered roughly 0.5% of Iceland's entire landmass. Only when standing speechless before the vast array of craters does one truly grasp the scale of the cataclysm...

The Laki area offers several hiking trails, both long and short, of varying difficulty levels. The most popular route leads to the summit of Mount Laki, taking about an hour and a half. The summit stands at an elevation of 818 meters, offering expansive panoramic views over the rest of the craters.
