Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

A visit to Hofn is merely an introduction to the gem of the south – the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon is located about 80 km from Hofn, a 45-minute drive on Route 1.

The lagoon is stunning in its beauty, and it is hard to describe in words the special colors, the size of the icebergs, the waves, the serenity, and the rare beauty unfolding before your eyes. The lagoon covers an area of 20 sq km and reaches depths of over 300 meters. It is the largest and deepest glacier lagoon in Iceland.

The lagoon was formed in 1932; prior to that, the area was entirely covered by a thick glacier. When the glacier began to melt, large chunks of ice broke off and started floating across the surface of the lagoon until they reached the open sea. The floating icebergs are full of surprises, reflecting different colors from every angle. It is hard not to marvel at the rare spectacle before you. A unique way to experience the lagoon up close is by taking an amphibious boat tour, which cruises between the floating icebergs and brings you even closer to this natural wonder. During the cruise, you will listen to explanations from a local guide and perhaps even get to taste natural Icelandic glacial ice... The boat trip lasts about 45 minutes and departs every hour on the hour until 18:00.
While the icebergs look immense, we actually only see about 10% of their true size. The icebergs extend deep beneath the water, reaching all the way to the lagoon's floor!

In late summer and during the evening hours, dozens of seals arrive at the lagoon, splashing around for their own enjoyment and delighting enthusiastic travelers.
Whether you choose to take a boat cruise or simply watch the icebergs from the shore and admire the scenery – the Glacier Lagoon offers views you will never forget!
