The town is home to about 8000 people (as of 2020), but at the peak of the tourist season, thousands more tourists are added to its population.

Tamarindo is famous for its popular surfing beaches, suitable for both beginners and more experienced surfers, and for its ecotourism. It is very popular with American tourists, both young people attracted to the surfing beaches and the variety of nightlife options, and older adults who find it reminiscent of Hawaii from fifty years ago before tourism there fully developed.

After paddling for about an hour, you get off the kayak and walk among the trees where groups of monkeys run and howl. Among the trees are many holes in the ground from which colorful crabs often peek out. After a walking tour of about half an hour, you return to the kayak and paddle back to the starting point.
