Turtles in Tortuguero
From Puerto Limon, you can reach the nearby town of Moin (about a 15-minute drive), which serves as a departure point for boats (about a three-hour cruise through jungle rivers) heading to Tortuguero, where the famous attraction is turtle watching.

"Sloth Sanctuary" Reserve
A highly recommended private tour is to the Sloth Sanctuary, located about a 35-minute drive from the cruise pier. The sanctuary was established by an animal-loving American family and currently houses about a hundred sloths of two types: the larger species with two "fingers" (toes) and the smaller one with three.

Injured and sick sloths found by people, especially orphaned baby sloths, come to the facility. It features a sophisticated clinic and an amazing staff that cares for the sloths with love and devotion. Those who recover are released back into the wild, but many remain at the sanctuary for life because they cannot survive in nature. There are blind sloths, those without limbs, and especially sloths that were found as babies and grew up there. A baby raised without its mother can never survive in the wild because only the mother can teach it basic skills.
The most successful tour at the sanctuary is called the: INSIDER’S TOUR and lasts about four hours. During the tour, you will visit the nursery where babies from just a few days old to several months are kept in incubators, visit the "kindergarten" for juveniles aged several months to about a year, and also visit the adult sloth cages and the clinic. During the tour, you will learn much about this unique animal, its lifestyle, behavior in the wild and the sanctuary, the many existential threats facing sloths—most caused by humans—and the activities on-site. Every sloth in the sanctuary has a name given by the founder, who still lives and works there.

The site is located in a forest teeming with trees and other animals, with a river running through its center. The tour also includes a one-hour guided canoe trip on the river where you can observe many monkeys, birds, and wild, impressive vegetation.

Reservations for the tour must be made in advance because it is designed for small groups and is held only twice a day. It is also recommended to book a round-trip transfer from the ship.
