General Information

Dominica is a green, mountainous island abundant with water and vegetation in the southeastern part of the Caribbean islands and is known as the "Nature Island." On the island, which is 29 miles long and 16 miles wide, there are 365 rivers (one for every day of the year) and a wealth of waterfalls and lakes. On the island, there are several extinct volcanoes and several dormant volcanoes, and it has natural hot springs where you can bathe. The island is rich in rain forests and spice plants such as: nutmeg, cinnamon, cocoa, coffee, and more.

The official language on the island is English, although many residents speak a Creole language based on French. Most residents on the island are Christians.

In Dominica, there is a national park covering an area of 17,000 acres named: Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The park, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes several crater lakes, waterfalls, and still-magnificent rain forests. In the center of the park is the "Emerald Pool" surrounded by ferns, dense vegetation, and orchids. It is recommended to bathe in the refreshing lake waters.

The capital of the island is Roseau, where the cruise port is located:

In the city are beautiful botanical gardens. Columbus also discovered Dominica on one of his voyages in 1493 and named it so because he reached the island on a Sunday. Over the years, the French and the English fought over the island, and the English ruled it until 1978, when the island gained independence. Thanks to its wild beauty, the island was chosen as the filming location for two of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

Dominica is also a recommended destination for diving and snorkeling, although it should be taken into account that most of the beaches are rocky or have black sand. There are no five-star hotels on the island and no skyscrapers; it is an authentic, safe island with friendly and welcoming residents.
