Phillip Island – An Experience of Penguins, Seals, and Koalas
Although this trip is not in Melbourne itself, a visit to Melbourne is not complete without travelling to nearby Phillip Island.
The drive there takes about 1:45 hours (140 km). You should dedicate a full day to this trip.

On the island, there are plenty of unique opportunities to view the special animals that inhabit the area. It is worth starting with a cruise to observe the huge seal colony; the tour boat approaches small, isolated islands where thousands of seals lie, a very special sight.
Afterwards, a visit to The Koala Conservation Centre. Here, you can get close to the koalas—even within arm's reach. The koalas can be found both in high trees and next to the walking trails, where fresh eucalyptus branches have been placed in large vases so visitors can observe these cute animals up close.
For dessert, there is the main attraction on the island:
Watching the parade of penguins emerging in huge numbers from the sea after sunset.
It is recommended to purchase (preferably a day in advance) a ticket called Ultimate Penguin Experience, which includes a guided tour with the park rangers in the penguins' habitat and watching them together (they hand out binoculars and provide explanations) at the best location in a covered spot (keep in mind that it can be cold in the evening, especially at the regular viewing station exposed to winds).
A combined ticket for several attractions on the island can be purchased at a discounted price.
On Phillip Island, there is also a well-known race track you can visit, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
You can also visit Churchill Island, an open-air museum featuring historic buildings you can explore.
